Highest year you can go is 2003
All 2004 and up have digital odometers

How much different are the clusters other than the odometer? I know they will bolt in, but are the connectors the same?

What I would like to do is have one of the newer clusters (because they look cooler) and if only the odometer is different I could just find a way to wire it up, and worst case I wouldn't but I am keeping this truck until one of us dies so I do not see that as being a large issue.

Also sorry for bumping / hijacking an old thread... This one just has the best answers of anything else I have found.

I would think they'd be the same.

This interests me also, worse case scenario you could always get an ultra gauge.

Jump in and make a run at it.

I haven't heard anyone pulling it off since they came out ten years ago....but there always has to be a first!

If I was a betting man, you'd have a wiring nightmare. When they changed dashes they also changed ecm's IIRC. Look up the wiring diagrams and find the differences and similarities.

Major night and day differences. 04 brought about a tremendous wiring change in the Ranger (like for starters, no more GEM because much of the GEM functions got moved into the SJB (smart junction box)) and the inception of the CAN bus which, for 04-05 Rangers (and?) is only incorporated into the cluster. Now if the Ford mechanic I spoke with is correct, they changed things again in 06, which puts another spin on things. If you cozy up to the schematics and dive into the FSM, you will note that there is a microprocessor in there. I expect that this is why, when the ignition on an 04+ Ranger is turned on, that all of the warning indicators on the cluster are verified for functionality, and if there is a failure, a DTC in the B or C series will be set (most people are familiar with P, powertrain series and only the DTC's in this series that they can see with a low cost code reader).

See where this is going?

Edit: The odometer is just the tip of the iceberg compared to the rest. But hey, if you can figure out how to do this short of rewiring an entire vehicle with 04+ wiring, you'll be a hero!

Haha, well as much as I love being a hero, I can't wire worth crap and make my friend do it for me... I guess if I ever find a cluster at a jy I'll pull it sense it is cheap and have him take a look and see if it can be made to work. If that ever happens, I'll make a thread on it!
