Default Alright I give how do you get column cover off???

Cut hand and a few curse words later and I give up. I am trying to remove the steering column cover and it is bound by the entire dash! Am I retarded?

Should have been just a couple of screws. I don't remember for sure on mine, but I think you had to squeeze the bottom half near the seam to release a couple of snap locks. Here is a pic out of the service manual, maybe it will help:]

I appreciate the pic, but am at a loss with this thing. All the screws are out, but my shifter is on the column =1, the tilt lever is bigger than it's hole =2, there seems to be a lip on the back of the top cover as well as the screw bosses that are preventing me from getting the cover around where I could slip it off the shifter =3, the bottom cover is hanging up in the back like it has a lip also =4. I have moved the column up and down and all but broke the covers to no avail. I am hoping not to have to remove the lower panel and gauge surround to simply remove the cover, but unless someone knows of a magic button. I think I am done for the night.

Purpose for this endeavor is to update the multi-funct. switch and hopefully get my daggon shifter marker to line up properly, it looks like it's in nuetral when it's in drive.

You have to take apart the dash first starting with the kick panel and reinforcement panel. Then remove the instrument cluster bezel. Now you can start removing the steering column covers.

Doh!

Guess I'll be finding the white gauges and temp control and having me some fun this weekend.
So much for a quick little add on after installing my 07 MP3 radio.

Thanks for the dissappointing news, but atleast I know it's not just me. I don't remember ever having to tear a car down this much to remove the column cover. . . .

My girlfriend's Exploder Sport is the same way. I haven't had the need to take the covers off of my steering column on my CR-V or any other vehicle, so I can't say if it's a Ford thing or not.

Well I got them off for the love of Pete. It is necessary to first remove the lower panel by the knees, then the steel panel behind it, then the center console(radio surround), then you have access to the something like 10 screws to remove the cluster surround panel. With all of these piecs off you can easily remove the column covers. . . . . Well atleast it shouldn't creak with age. . . Thanks all!
I hope this can help some other poor unsuspecting soul. it's easy enough to remove the panels with the something like 4 different fasteners Ford used to install these parts, but knowing it is necessary from the start should be a great help.

Are you saying after removing the lower dash panel, you drop the whole steering column, which makes it possible to remove the column cover? My shift indicator is also off, plus, it seems like something is loose where the shifter goes into the column. When I pull back on the shifter to get it to move down into drive, I can see it moving in a direction that it is not suppossed to be moving. I just bought this truck yesterday, and would like to fix this so it doesn't fall apart on me.
Thanks,
Brett....
