Cigarette lighter specs?

I've got a '94 ranger, and the stupid manual is in french.

anyone know how many volts and amps are available through the cigarette lighter?

...with the truck running, assuming a good alternator, it's 13.8V (nominally 12V); it may be less than that without the engine running, depending on the condition of your battery.

as far as amperage goes, check the fuse for that circuit -- you can safely draw up to the maximum amperage that the fuse on the circuit will allow. as a ballpark guess, I'd say 1 or 2A.

Multiplied by 20 or by 10, yes.

The lighter plugs are fused at either 20 or 25. 25 was only in the older models. 2001 and newer are 20 amps. Everything is 12v, which while the engine is running is ~13.8v

@FireRanger: is the cigarette lighter the only thing on that circuit?

The thread title says "Cigarette lighter specs", not "Cigarette lighter socket specs" -- I rather doubt that the cigarette lighter draws 20 or 25 amps!! Further, I would be surprised if you could draw a continuous 20A from that socket for any great length of time.

You're referring to the actual lighter device itself. But that isn't what he was asking for. I direct you re-read his post a little beyond the title

Which the correct answer is the rating of the fuse which is either 20 or 25 amps. And yes, actually it can sustain that current for as long as you can draw it. The wiring, connectors, and sockets are all up to that spec. And yes, I have done it.

also, while you're off in your own little magical world of make-believe physics and ad-hoc mis-interpretation of the English language, please explain to us how (exactly) you measure current in an open circuit with no load (a cigarette lighter socket without a cigarette lighter element installed is an 'open circuit', and the lighter element is the 'load').

To answer your pointless question, you can't measure something that isn't there. There is no current in an open circuit. But that has absolutely nothing to do with this. The only one in some other magical world is you apparently. My god. He asked what the voltage was and how much current the lighter plug circuit can handle. I don't know why this is so hard for you to comprehend. You sound like a smart guy, but you're taking your misinterpretation to a whole new level by continuing to argue.
