Default Need help with heat/air stuck on defrost...

The heat/air on my 04 FX4 always blows on defrost no matter what setting I have the selector on. I understand that it's more than likely a vacuum leak but where do I need to be looking and what am I looking for? Help would be appreciated. Thanks,

Could it be the switch itself is bad?

Could be. I have some tools but not enough to test the switch itself. As much as I'd hate to do this I may just bite the bullet and drop the truck off at a dealership to get a few issues resolved. This issue and another, where the truck remains at a high idle (2000-2500rpm) while driving when the clutch is depressed until I come to a complete stop, where it drops back down to normal idle range....have been driving me nuts and there's only so much I can fix on my own without help. I really do appreciate the help I've got on this forum though and I'm sure I'll have plenty more questions.

Ok, try junkyarding the HVAC panel, and swap them to see if it works. If you happen to find one, let me know and I can walk you through the swap if need be. The idle thing I would definately have a dealer look at it. I personally would not let the dealer work on the hvac when it may just be a simple swap and they will bend you over for the switch

the default setting for the heat is defrost.......as you know you probably have a vacuum line disconnected and that might be why your idle is messed up.......follow the vacuum line though the firewall and look for a crack or if it disconnected.....do a search. I be you can figure it out.

----------

does your 4 wheel drive work? do you have the vacuum operated 4 wd drive? is your CEL on? do you have any codes? did you look in the engine compartment and follow the vacuum lines looking for something wrong..

try the spraying carb cleaner around looking for a change in idle.....you also can use a unlit propane torch? I bet you have a good size leak and it would not be hard to find

I think this is what is wrong with mine. I was doing some work there and had to take that cover off inside the fender and must have pulled a hose off or something because I heard the sound of air rushing and now it's stuck on defrost.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm going to look around but there's a private garage in town that I've used twice before. They don't charge to look around and see if it's anything obvious so I'm going to let them look tomorrow. If they don't find anything I'll take it down to the Auto Craft Center (public garage on post...I'm on Ft. Carson) and have them take their smoke machine to it to try finding the leak. I never considered that the leak could be causing the Idle problems...would be great if I could kill two birds with one stone on this one.

A quick note on the switch itself...it still blows out of the defroster even when on any of the other settings. It does not stop when you take it off defrost and move it to the floor or any other setting. With the exception of "Off", it always blows out of the defroster.

Also...in regards to the high idle...if it is a vacuum issue why would it hold a high idle until I come to a complete stop? Seems like that would be some sort of wheel speed sensor issue if that makes any sense. I'm still learning though so I appreciate the patience. Thanks.
