Most of these newer vehicles would be a complete nightmare to run full stand-alone. OBD1 on the other hand is remarkably easy to run a stand-alone in comparison.
And unless you are running that laptop all the time good luck being able to "adjust pulse width at your whym". Sounds like you would prefer a programmable "chip" installed in your pcm / ecu - which would make it much harder to perform these adjustments you speak of... Install a wide-band o2 sensor and a high end pcm/ecu controller you'd have plenty of adjustments at your disposal. The factory fuel system on the 2000+ sohc 4.0 has plenty of flow and the injectors can provide more than enough fuel for mid cfm 5-8 psi boost
