Default discoloration on shifter knob

Why would a shifter knob look this bad when it's only 6 years old? The rest of the interior is in immaculate condition.
Do you think it's because of the previous owner or do you think this is a factory defect?

I seen one of those LED shift lights at Wally World today and was tempted to get one but then I thought it might look kinda corny.
If anyone can post some pics of their factory shifters or aftermarket shifters I'd really appreciate it.

That's built up oils and skin flakes from your hand. If you mist it down with water and let it sit for a bit, a lot will come off. Then repeat. Days where humidity is high and it has rained for a good while will do the same thing.

Well I'll be darn, I though it was wore down. I'm gonna take some 409 to that thing and see if I can clean it up.

Yeah my fiance's jeep did the same thing all over the radio and shifter. Literally took some water and elbow grease and it came right off.

That Hurst shifter looks nice.
I don't understand why Ford quit using the black and white ceramic shiter knobs in 2000.
Would a 2000 and earlier shifter knob go on a 2001+ Ranger?
