The unit itself doesn't matter as much as the type of antenna.

If your going the Magnetic Mount route, look into a K40. The one i just looked at is a 58in. I run a mag mount Radio-shack 3ft, and it works but i could be better.

Permanent Mount, i have very little advice for ya there, hopefully someone else will chime in with some tips on that.

Transceiver wise, i run a Radio-shack brand mini mobile. It's a tiny little thing and works pretty good. Cobra is a good unit as well, as is Midland.

I've got a Midland 1001Z... good little radio, got it for $25 at Buy.com. Like the person above mentioned, the radio doesn't matter as much as the antenna does. I got a good 6 miles of range with a 4ft tune-able tip firestik in a hood mount on my ranger...

Your best range will be with a 102" whip...

A solid mount is the way to go. The trick to a good antennae is a solidly grounded antennae. A whip usually does better, but I like the Francise antennae as they are cheap, take abuse and perform very well. I run Francise on my Freightliner. The radio is a matter of preference..I run a Stryker 490-SR, which is a 10 meter radio with all the bells and whistles, but Midland and Cobra are good radio's to start with. If you buy used, be sure to take it to a CB shop and have the radio tuned and peaked as well as have the SWR"S checked and set in the antennae system. If the SWR"S aren't set correctly, you will burn your finals in the radio.

The cb does matter. Some higher end models can be unlocked and boosted safely.

I used to piss off people who thought i had an amp, they could hear me several channels away, sometimes i'd just lock channels for fun.

Still illegal, but thats beside the point... so if you don't try to modify your radio, you don't need an expensive one.

I had to trade a 08 Jeep Wrangler in on My 04 Ranger because the economy started suckin hind tit so bad (thanks Odumbo) we just couldn't afford my Jeep anymore. I had gotten a nice little recovery kit that included a Midland 75-822 CB. It's a handheld all in one unit. It also converts to a nice little handheld portable with the separate battery pack. Although of course, with the handheld antenna, it is somewhat limited. It works very well though, with a standard automotive antenna. I like mine a lot.

Cobra 29 is pretty well the standard for CB's in the trucking world... you're good with it!

Avoid magnet mount antennas... they are not very good for performance... and avoid short antennas, they are not good for performance at all.

You'll need a more expensive one if you plan to gain on range because it'll be made with quality parts that can be tweaked, stuff you surely won't see in a 50$ minimalistic circuit board. As for being illegal, the CB have been de-regulated here for years, no one drives around checking for broadcast liscences here.

If i had a car, i'd go for the wilson 1000 or k40, those two kicked some serious range ass. With my jeep, i alternated between the magnet mounted k40 and a fiberglass 102" (wish i could find a 102" nowadays, haven't seen one in years..) and casually spoke with people who weren't even registering as static to my friends' setups.

I can't stand those crappy k30, "mini will" and knock offs.

The rubbery Firesticks and K40s were nice, but never gave the range i wanted. Although they made for great directional antennas during hunts (i had a socket that could fold to make the antenna lay on my car).

For performance ya want a steel antennae...just make sure you get the SWR's checked and mount it silid so you have a good ground. My Stryker radio came out of the box with a 125 watt pill built in it. It is a top notch radio, but expensive. The Cobra 29 LTD is a nice radio. The Cobra radio's are popular, but can only be peaked out so far. The better the antennae the better the signal you will put out as well as recieve.

----------

If you go on EBAY there is a very nice antennae that a few of my buddies have bought it is called a "Viper" and it does put out and receive very well. They sell for like 35-40 bucks.

I also have a floor mount on mine that i can adjust it..

Here i have a magnet mount on my rack which I am using right now for the radio and on the back bumper I have 2 7ft firesticks one is black and one is yellow which i disconnected from the radio I went to a TA truck stop to have my radio tweaked antennas where adjusted to full strength..

Like I said, 102" whips are the best... you can get em at radio shack or www.walcottcb.com I believe has them also.

Also, like I said, a 4ft tuneable tip firestik will work great also.

Wilson 2000 or 5000 trucker's will work great too.

Just make sure you get the setup tuned...
