Default Put explorer gauge in my 97 ranger and now it beeps

I have just bought a 97 ford ranger 4x4 which needed work. I'm trying to fix the dead speedometer. I bought a new gauge cluster from a ford explorer, was told by the salvage yard that it will fit my truck. I plugged it in tonight and the speedomter now works!

The problem I noticed comparing the 2 is that the new gauge does not have 3 diodes on the back that my ranger gauge has. Also the explorer gauge has a fuel cap light which on my ranger is labeled as a check engine/wait to start light. Now my truck makes a constant beep beep noise when running and the fuel cap light stays on... which I dont even think it has a fuel cap sensor?? I should also mention I removed the light bulb to the seat belt light because on my old gauge it stayed on all the time and I really did not want to see it on there again after I got done! lol So I want to point that out if maybe it could be doing something. I for once was smart and tested the new gauge before putting the dash all back together so if it needs to come out it wont be too much.

----------

These are the three diodes that are not on my new speedometer head. What are they for?

Looked at it some more. The ABS light also stays on now which it didnt on the old one. It makes several sets of 5 high pitch beeps after first starting up. I tried anything I could think of to get it to stop, the door adjar, the seat belts, head lights. Then after several sets of the beeping it stopped on its own until I turned the truck off and started it again. These are not the normal beeps from when you turn the key on. It sounds more like a fedex truck backing up.

Id love ti help you out but i honestly have no idea id imagine the diodes are screwing you over. Any chance of finding a ranger cluster? That would probably be your best bet.

I emailed the salvage yard about it and with fingers crossed maybe they will switch them out. I am very suprised these are different, but I had a feeling when they said it was from an explorer. Would be curious to find out what exactly the diodes are for. Only thing is I bought this one because it is very close to my trucks original miles.

I would definitely say that your new cluster isnt compatable. Getting another would be in your best interest.

If i remember correctly there is a how-to on how to change your odometer somewhere around the site(or even swap them from one cluster to another). So if you can find it i wouldn't worry about your "new" cluster being close to your original miles. That is if your new cluster came from a ranger

Found the how-to

Hmm, do you know what year explorer the cluster is out of? I literally just finished swapping out a cluster from a 96 expo into my 97 ranger and everything seems to work fine other than the temp gauge. And the fuel cap light illuminates on mine during startup but doesn't stay lit... maybe the cluster you got was messed up before you got it? It was a wrecked explorer after all.

the high pitched beeps are due to the air bag light being burnt out or not there. replace the bulb and the beeping will stop.

on my 95, i had to swap the wires for the door ajar light and the fuel reset when i put the explorer cluster in. a simple 5 minute rewire took care of that.

Thanks!!! I had a feeling the beep is due to the air bag light being removed. I'll put it back in and see what happens.
