Default 2010 stick-shift knob replacement

I have an old 8-ball knob that i've used since my very first car (standard screw-in type), and I really want to install it on my 2010 Ranger.

Anyone knows how to remove the original knob ??

I can't unscrew it, can't find set-screws that are holding it in place...

please tell me the original knob is removable !

changing the shift knob
the knob is on a splined shaft, and will not screw off (no pun intended), so heat it up and pull hard. the 8 ball wont go on if its a screw on, maybe you could modify it.

The infamous ranger shift knob haha. I would assume the 2010's are the same as my 03. The knob is actually held in place by a spline set up. In theory you SHOULD be able to pull straight up on it. Again SHOULD is the keyword lol. Some people got them off using heat and a pipe wrench. Mine just happened to break loose on its own one day.

They are a huge pain my friend!!

Maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong, mine was set up like this going from the rubber layer inward:

Rubber casing
Plastic casing that slides over smooth metal piece
And the smooth metal piece is where it fits over the spline

Hope that helps! Fyi probably won't come off in one piece lol.

I had the hardest time- after peelong off the rubber shell, and breaking away the molded plastic ball I was still left with the aluminum core stubbornly stuck on the end of the stick shift.

I used the wrench-and-hammer method for 3 days before being reminded I had a creme brulee torch in the pantry.

About two to three minutes of direct heat where the knob met the shaft and the remaining plastic melted a bit and it pulled right off.

The new knob I have is threaded, so I will epoxy some threaded rod to the hollow shifter rod to make it changeable for the future.
