4x4 knob too easy to rotate

An employee reached into the cab of my Ranger yesterday to use the cigarette lighter. I watched him do it and all appeared innocent.

When I got into the Ranger to drive it, I thought to myself how rough it was driving. After a block, I noticed that the 4X4 light was illuminated on the instrument cluster. I immediately looked and saw that the 4x4 knob had been rotated a bit and had engaged the system causing the 'rough' ride on pavement. I immediately turned it back to 2x4 off position.

Yes, the cigarette lighter is immediately adjacent to the 4x4 control. Also, the knob has an elevated profile section that is easy to strike causing it to move. The control should have been designed with a requirement to press it inwards to engage instead of a simple rotation which can happen by accident.

I've been driving rangers with this style switch for 12 years or so and I can honestly say I've never accidentally switched into 4x4 ever. Even if I had I wouldn't even have made it out of park without noticing the bright yellow light on the dash indicating that 4x4 was engaged.

^right...i never engaged 4wd in my ranger unless i wanted too...and how can you not notice that light on your dash?

I know if you have taken in apart there is a little ball in there and if you put it together without that ball it will be really easy to turn. I know this because I lost the ball with I put the led in mine and now its really ease to turn but I have yet to put it in 4x4 on accident.

That guy was a moron & he just saw switches & wanted to play with them.

He either broke the shaft mount part of the knob or he really boned it & broke something inside the actual switch.

You can pull the knob straight out & see if anything is broken on the actual knob & try turning the shaft by hand to see if it's internal.

If you need a new knob or switch just let me know, I should have some extras & I'll give you a good deal on 'em

DJFllman: If you actually read the post, you would easily see that I noticed the dash light within a block of driving. In daylight hours, the light is not so bright so your statement is unwarranted and you just show your nasty nature. You display it on many threads and it is not appreciated. Stow it.

I've never hit mine by accident.... On the rare occasion a light pops up in the cluster I'm immediately drawn to it, kinda why they're called idiot lights. I guess you didn't hear the transfer case shift either
