OEM vs. aftermarket
FRFs (Fellow Ranger Fans):
I've been around the block long enough to know aftermarket parts are often quite better than the OEM stuff, but humble enough to realize that's not always true.
Case in point: the inside rear view mirror in my '02 4X4 SuperCab Edge Plus Flareside. The original, clip-equipped part (made by Donnelly) recently broke, so I bought a CIPA universal model with a set screw. It fit on the windshield button, but failed the first time I tried to adjust it after installation. After returning that one, I bought a Pilot universal fit mirror; the night feature tilted the mirror so far up I couldn't see anything behind me, except my headliner. It was returned, too.
Finally, I broke down and ordered an OEM part (also Donnelly) from the LFH (local Ford house). I just picked it today at lunch, installed it and things are right in the world again. Price diff? About $15 more than either the CIPA or Pilot versions. I'd say it's worth it; the thing works smoothly, doesn't vibrate and seems more sturdy than the aftermarket stuff. My point? If all else fails, look to the OEM.
