Hurst Shifter......... Comments PLEASE!!!
Hi all. My truck is a 2003 Ford Ranger 4.0 with a 3" bl. i need a bit of help.
My truck runs really good. The problem is the guy who lifted it put in a shift lever that has all kinds of play in it. It moves around from the east coast to the west coast.
I want it tight and to feel like it should nice and tight. i want to buy a hurst shifter for it, I have looked into them but i need comments from everyone to get an idea or other ideas for this. Do you like Hurst shifters if you have them. if not what kind do you have are they good and or what would you get if you had the opportunity. Thanks and Thanks again. Jay

Re: Hurst Shifter......... Comments PLEASE!!!
I dont have one, but I know the guys that have them on body lifted trucks say you need to put a modified mount on them. I remember seeing a pic of one and it was a piece of flat metal that looked like a "Z" with 4 bolt holes in it

Re: Hurst Shifter......... Comments PLEASE!!!
I'm one of them. I have a bracket that moves the shifter up 2.75" and back 1.25" from the base plate. (I think, Shane and his brother made mine, but I believe those numbers are right). And like Adam said, they have 2 holes for mounting it to the hurst base plate, and 2 holes above those for mounting the shifter arm to the bracket.

Re: Hurst Shifter......... Comments PLEASE!!!
i love mine too. i made my own bracket but its similar to shanes and trevors. i ran without one for a while the shifter isn't really low without the bracket but it does make a huge difference.

This sounds similar to substituting the standard arm (5384106) that comes in the kit (3915020) with the alternate arm (5388022) per George Novak at http://george-novak.com/Hurst2.html

Re: Hurst Shifter......... Comments PLEASE!!!
Yep, I would rather add to a existing topic than create yet another thread to be found to get the full story. BTW, I just installed the Hurst shifter on my 95 Explorer Sport. I included a layer of grey waffle foam (from a shipping container) around the shifter base to augment the stock rubber seal. Acoustics are well under control. Vibration is detectable, but not objectionable. I love the precise feel of the tighter Hurst shifter but can see it is not for everyone as the 'gates' require a certain amount of attention to get the intended gear.
You might be amused to note while testing the new shifter adjustment, I figured out there is no gate for reverse gear, just a longer throw to the right. I started with a VW Squareback, which required you to noticeably depress the shift to engage reverse. I have an automatic habit of pushing down the shift nob down when reaching for reverse -- which has no effect in this case!
