Default Column shift to floor shift. Does this make sense?

Hi all. Im new hear so please dont eat me alive. But I was wondering if it at all made sense to attempt with with my Ranger. I want to move the shifter from the steering column to the floor in between my seats. I do not know of any benefits of either and I do not race or anything like that but I really like the feel of the shifter at my lower right. Plus I have found some really neat looking ones. Does this make sense to attempt if only for cosmetics? Would anyone happen to know how much something like this would cost? I'm not proficient enough at mechanics to do it myself.

The one I'm eyeballing...

Sounds like a great idea to me. If its more comfortable than I say go for it. I am doing the same on my 89 but it is getting a v8 also. My plan os a custom console and a z-gate shifter. It does seem to more erganomic too.

I think you posted this in your new guy post also, what are your plans as far as adapting it to your tranny, also are you planning a custom steering column, one from a standard, or just putting it in N and cutting the one off your column now?

I am keeping up with this. i'm planning to use a sn95 mustang floor shifter in my 93 to go with the mustang dash. the only problem i'm concerned with is if the gear positions are the same. ie: when i pull from park to reverse, is the notch cutout on the shifter the same as the trans. make sense?

I bet Ford switched to column shift starting with the 2nd gen Rangers because that's when they introduced the Explorer, which is based off of the Ranger, and all had buckets in front and a full length floor console.

Let's put it this way, all your transmission needs to change gears is something to rotate the selector stem.
You wanna use different linkage to do that, you can. Whether that's in the form of a kit or something you'll have to research and fabricate, it can be done. Just remember it'll also have to operate your indicator. The steering column can probably be closed out with a part or two from a manual column.
