Instrument Cluster Bulbs
The article on that is spot on. However you should disconnect the negative battery cable 1st. While you are at it you might as well remove the lens from the cluster unit and clean it up with a lint free cloth. I found a 7/32 socket fit these little ones better than metric. Otherwise it was all a 7 & 8mm socket. A surprise to me when I reconnected the ground is that my CD-6 works again. It screws up when I unload/reload a CD. Last time I then disconnected/reconnected the battery and it still wouldn't play CD's. Although only one bulb was burnt out..the cluster looks way better now.

Re: Instrument Cluster Bulbs
Yes...6 194's...go for the 194 LL's though (Long Life). You might as well replace all 6 at the same time so you should be good for some years.

Re: Instrument Cluster Bulbs
And you do not need to disconnect the battery since it will not do anything to the process of taking the cluster out.

Re: Instrument Cluster Bulbs
That may be but it is still standard recommended practice when removing anything electrical and takes seconds. If you are gonna lose programmed play lists or something for sure you don't want to do it. The other member asked how many bulbs..said nothing about LED's..excuse me. So LED's are available for most of the bulbs now?..except maybe the headlights?

Taking out the battery is just another step and trouble you have to go through when it comes to LEDs. Because once you get the LEDs in, you need to test them to make sure you have them in right. They have a reverse polarity. LEDs are available for mostly any bulbs. I myself have a complete LED conversion in my truck. Headlights? Well, let's say no to that, there are no LEDs for headlights unless you do a Halo mod and put Halo rings around the headlights and use LEDs for that . They have LEDs for the fog lights though and signals and side markers. Go here and you can find just about any type of LED for your truck. http://www.superbrightleds.com/

Re: Instrument Cluster Bulbs
it doesnt look like you took it this far apart, but is the green color of the lights green for the same reason as on the heating/ac controlls (that being a small plastic piece) because im working on turning as many of the interior lights blue as possible and i want blue gauge lights but dont know if its doable

The green or blue color in the hvac comes from a color filter film inside the hvac panel itself. It's easy to remove/change/sand/paint if you want to change the color. I wouldn't recommend just putting in colored led's as the red/blue blend indicator will probably turn out all blueish or all purple.
The green/blue color in the cluster comes from the stock gauge overlays that are painted on the back side. Changing color here usually requires removing the needles & overlays, sanding the color off the back side & re-painting them, reinstalling & recalibrating everything.
In my case, my dash had blue back lighting & I simply installed my own modded green led's & everything that was blue is now green, even the needles. Not sure how green to blue would work, but it's worth a shot.

Re: Instrument Cluster Bulbs
I see that many are switching to, even advising such..to LED's..be carefull with that. LED's behind an instrument cluster?...why? LED's will be perfected in time,..but Xmas lights have been recalled do to a fire hazard...risk that in your truck?....what would your insurance company make of that?

Re: Instrument Cluster Bulbs
They are a LOT SAFER than those stock bulbs...people have been maimed by the stock bulbs? "Taking out the battery is just another step and trouble you have to go through when it comes to LEDs"...dah...I said disconnect the Negative terminal...not take the battery out of the vehicle!!!!..takes a few seconds for an un-handicapped person...those that are handicapped hopefully have assistance readily available.
Who really cares..ordinary bulbs last a long time..some recommend replacing all every 2-3 years...I try to go with 3. Preventative Maintenance is what that is....putting unknown quality/safety shit in my electrical system I don't really want to add. So let's hear your brilliant comeback...starting with 'Taking the Battery Out'.
Should be entertaining.
