Default Center Console breakdown

When I purchased my '98 XLT Ranger obviously a very heavy guy owned the truck as not only was the drivers' seat broken but the lid on the console was broken, (Crushed) as well. The lid was mush. I purchased another on E Bay and shortly after installing it I noticed that the lid was starting to get mushy in the middle.

I disassybled the interior of the console, (You have to peel back the felt on both the lid and bottom to get to the screws)

I then removed the material covering. I placed a piece of aluminum that was cut the shape of the interior of the foam. I used JB Weld to not only reinforce the lid but also to bond the aluminum to the lid. I then added another layer of padding and recovered the lid.

A very large gorilla can now get in and out of my truck without crushing the lid.

I would really like to post pix but.....I don't know how. Plus, it's all together and to post a pix of the finished product it would look just like OEM.

When tearing into the unit for the first time, admittedly it's kinda scary but if it's taken slow it really goes smooth. I did this with the console still in the vehicle. A stubby Phillips screw driver is needed.

Start with pulling up the felt in the bottom, there you will find four (4) screws. Remove the screws but don't try to lift the bottom bucket out just yet.

On the lid, remove or just pull back the four (4) corners of the felt exposing four (4) screws. Remove the screws & this portion of the inner lid. Now the bottom bucket can be removed. Remove the three (3) screws holding the hinge to the console and remove the lid.

The fabric will probably be attached with a zillion staples. These staples, in my opinion added to the weakening of the plastic portion of the lid that often breaks when we lean on the console. I chose to use a razor blade and cut the fabric free leaving the staples in place.

Once free the molded foam will come free as well. I acquired a piece of aluminum cut/filed to fit inside the foam. I had some cracks in my lid & that is why I reinforced the plastic with JB Weld and positioned the aluminum on top of the wet JB Weld and fused it all together.

Now, just replace the material or use another piece (Readily available at auto top shops) I added a layer of 1/4" of waste padding on top of the foam. Get a rattle can of spray adhesive and glue the extra pad, (if used) to the foam or the material to the foam, wrapping it around the sides and securing it with glue as well. (Remember, I think the staples added to the weakness).

Now in reverse order, reassemble the pieces, re-glue the removed felt and viola...done deal.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask any questions.

Rog

Welcome to the site Roger. The modification sounds very interesting, but it's best if wrote as a how-to with pics included. Is this the 60/40 seat mounted console? Or the bucket floor mounted console?

Head on over to photobucket.com and create an account. Upload your pics there, then copy the IMG code, paste here, bam! Pics on a forum.

This is the 60/40 seat. When I entered into this mod it was somewhat a "fishing expedition" and documentation never entered my mind. Sorry but there is no way for me to take it apart as it is now "ONE".
I did my best in explaining the procedure.

Nice work and explanation. I have the same situation in my 97. I was planning on diggin into this project and even considering swapping seats. I figured Ford made the console part of the seat and they would have to go as one unit.

Thanks for posting.
