Default How can I stop the chime when doors left open?

I use my ranger for working outdoors. I would like to listen to the radio with the doors open so that I can get tools etc in and out. How do I stop the chime from leaving the doors open and the radio on?

just push the latch in with the door open, done

just make sure you pull the door handle so you unlatch it before trying to close the door.

...there's also a "Door Dinger Silencer" mod floating around somewhere. Requires a standard automotive relay, a momentary pushbutton switch, a bit of wire, and a few minutes time. Door chime works normally, and if you push the button to silence the door dinger, it will stay off until you shut the door.

I came up with this mod for my Ranger a few years ago and I really like it. It is more work than other methods and makes the most sense if you enjoy doing this kind of thing anyway.

Below are two schematics that have been used successfully for 2001~2003 and 2004~2006 Rangers. Other years should be similar although color codes and/or component locations may be different.

Note that there are repeated color codes in each of the two schematics. Despite the same code, these wires have separate functions and must not be connected together directly.

AS ALWAYS, PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.

If you're like me, you probably find the "key sense" reminder chime to be a real nuisance when working on the truck or just listening to the radio with the door open. On the other hand, it has saved me from locking myself out on more than one occasion.

This mod uses a simple pushbutton and a relay that gives you the option to silence the chime when the ignition switch is in the ACC position and the driver door is open. I find this arrangement perfect for cleaning or working on the truck with the driver door open and the radio on in ACC.

  • Pressing the pushbutton silences the annoying key sense chime when in ACC mode with the driver door open
  • If the pushbutton is not operated, the chime works exactly as it did from the factory
  • Reverts to factory operation whenever the ignition switch is moved from ACC or the driver door is closed
  • The automatic re-enable reduces the risk of locking the keys in the truck
  • Headlight chime is not affected by this mod

A relay socket makes wiring the relay easy and reliable. It is also possible to use 5 individual wire terminals pushed directly onto the relay spades:

The wire colors that I used as seen on the back of the relay socket
(Also see diagram below):

Blacks (Pins 85&87): connect together and then to one lug of the pushbutton
Blue (pin 86): tapped to the ACC power wire in the radio harness (Yellow/Black)
Yellow/Black (center pin 87A): to GEM (cut Yellow/Black near GEM)
Yellow/Black (lower pin 30): to driver door switch (cut Yellow/Black near GEM)

The pushbutton that I used. It has two black wires soldered to its lugs: one is connected to two of the relay pins (85 & 87) and the other goes to chassis ground. Any normally open (NO) pushbutton that can handle a half amp at 12v should work.

I installed the button by drilling a hole in the cover for the Restraints Control Module just forward of the floor shifters. It is out of the way yet easy to reach. Most Rangers don't have this exact style RCM cover but there are plenty of other places available that would work. Just be sure to check for adequate clearance for the hidden part of the switch and its wires.

The relay was mounted up inside the dash using double-sided tape. Another way would be to get the type of relay that has a mounting tab molded into the cover, then fasten it using a screw or bolt.

Parts I used:

Pushbutton (Normally open): Radio Shack P/N 275-609
Bosch-pattern Automotive Relay (SPDT): Ford P/N FOAZ-14N089-A
Bosch-pattern Automotive Relay socket: www.allelectronics.com P/N SRLY-2
3M ScotchLok wire tap
3M Double-sided mounting tape
Heatshrink tubing
scrap wire (16~18ga)

The part numbers above are what I happened to use. All of these parts are generic and readily available from many other sources.

Approximate cost: $15

Thanks, Bob! I couldn't remember if it was you or Griggs (N3ELZ) that had posted it, before...

...anyway, to the OP -- that's what I did on my truck. Acts just like normal, and I can silence the dinger on a per-use basis, when necessary. best of both worlds!

To disable the ignition chime 1997 Ranger... Remove radio by inserting four hex keys or similar into four holes in faceplate, angling hex key tips toward center to release latches; pull radio from dash a few inches. Remove two screws holding radio cowl and pry from dash. Remove two wires from cigarette lighter and pull radio and cowl clear of dash. Remove two screws holding heater baffle in place and remove it. Locate black plastic box to left with two multipin connectors. Remove screw from bracket and pull box free. Disconnect two multipin connectors and remove box from dash. Open box by releasing two plastic catches to reveal circuit board. Gently pull out the circuit board. Using a soldering iron, desolder the two pins connecting chime (black cylinder about size of four, stacked nickels) and remove it from circuit board. Return circuit board to black box. Re-install black box with multipin connectors re-attached, heater baffle, cigarette lighter wires, radio cowl and radio. No more chime.
