Default Cluster Compatibility sticky?!

Hi there everyone.

I'm currently fixing some seemingly common ranger issues:
  • Battery not charging - even after replacing alternator AND battery
  • speedo stopped
  • tach stopped
  • odometer stopped
  • etc
My thread is located here:
Battery not charging, no speedo/odo/right gauges

The last suggestion was to get a replacement cluster from a upull. Great idea, but while I'm at it, why not upgrade the cluster to a nicer one? This leads me to search for which models are compatible... but I'm not finding a list ... or any follow up posts on "yeah, actually, this year sport trac cluster works with this year 5spd ranger... etc"

Does anyone have a good reference for which clusters are interchangeable? If so, would one of you awesome mod's mind making that into a sticky? It really seems like that is a common question on these threads...

Or did I just completely miss it in my searching?

95-03 rangers will swap, and 95-01 explorers. basically, if it looks the same as what you have (minus the digital odometers in the 04+) it should work. a tach version will work if you don't have a tach. if you put a 98+ in a 95-97, some repinning may be needed, but i have yet to change any wiring on my 95 (currently has an 03 cluster). 95-97 guys may need to swap the water temp gauge as some have a resistor on them, while 98+ don't. if you don't change it, the water temp will peg hot withing a few minutes of driving.

Ok, so does automatic transmission or 5spd matter? Like, would an Auto cluster work on a 5spd? I have an 01 5spd and I'd LOVE a sport trac cluster... anyone know where I can get one? Our local pick'n'pulls are slim pickins... Cash 4 Clunkers didn't do much for providing them with an inventory

I just pulled out my instrument panel and found a black spacer where the gear shift indicator would go... made me kinda have a 'doh' moment.

Just to clarify, a 2001 - 2003 Explorer Sport Trac Instrument Panel will fit in my 2001 Ranger, correct?

I'm probably gonna buy one like this off ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/01-02...ht_1001wt_1166

hello all. i want to put a cluster from a 96 6cyl 5speed ranger with a tach in a 96 4cyl 5speed ranger with out a tach. will this swap work smoothly?

my main concern is that the 6cyl to 4cyl swap might not work out. i dont know though.

it is starting to seem the tach was a factory option.. perhaps depending on the trim level? i have had a 96 4cyl 5speed ext cab with a tach, but also a 97 4cyl 5speed reg cab without a tach, as well as my current 96 4cyl 5speed which has no factory tach.
