Hi. We have a 2003 Ford Ranger Edge. We've overfilled the oil reservoir by about 1/2 inch above the optimum range indicated on the stick. Is it safe to drive or are we going to have to drain some of the oil first? Thank you.
My understanding is that most cars (not sure about ford) dipsticks min and max line indicate about a quart if its over the max by more than the distance between the min and max, I would drain it. If not you'll probably be okay. If you're super into longevity of the truck than id still drain some. Too much can damage seals, however it wont damage internal components unless its so over filled that the level is above the lowest point of the crankshaft. Never seen it but i could see why that could cause issues
Thanks guys. And thank you, laxmasterj2, for the detailed answer. I think we'll drain some of the oil if we can get it running. Right now we think we've got fuel pump issues and may need to get it towed to the mechanic anyway. But we'll be sure to tell him about the oil level. Thanks!
