Default P/S to Manual Conversion.

Quick question: I have a 96 2wd 4cyl ranger. The Powersteering pump is going out after close to 300k miles. I'm looking alternatives because I'm sick of the sound they make (pump is louder than engine), want to prevent potential leaks, and improve fuel economy. Is it possible to remove the p/s rack, pump, and swap to a manual rack of an older model year say pre 1990s? Or are they a different size? Would I be better off getting a manual rack and pinion arm from a place like rockauto? Would a junkyard even carry a manual rack for my model year?

Not sure when the ranger came with the rack and pinion, but before then they had a steering sector box, completely different setup.

You will regret going from power steering to non power.......if the power steering pump bothers you, then turn the stereo louder.
1998-2011 are all rack and pinion.
Trying to improve fuel economy by ditching the PS pump......you can't be serious.

Steering rack went out in my 98 and it was several months before I was able to put a new one in. Believe me, you don't want to go without power steering, unless you really want to pump up your arms.
