Default A/C issues.. Maybe?

Ok so to make a long story short, I have had 4 Rangers and none have had a working A/C ( don't ask, just my luck). Anyhow I now have an 04 with what I feel is working too well. If I turn the temp down to cold in any setting, I mean floor or floor/ vent etc. The thing freezes me out. I mean this time of year it's nice to just have outside air coming in without A/C compressor running. Is this normal or do I have an issue? Thanks in advance.

OK as a side note, I know the compressor will kick on if any of the defrost modes are selected

I usually never turn the blue/red knob all the way cold. I always felt it was due to the small cab size, since I never really run heat all the way, either. Fan speed is usually 1 or 2, (except for extreme temps) as well.

Agreed, this time of year is nice for windows down All sounds normal, to me, anyway.

You should have Max and Normal A/C settings

Max recirculates the air and it can get very cold on MAX settings.

When you turn on the defroster the A/C compressor is supposed to kick on to prevent the Compressor from locking up during long Periods of not being used.

The blend door separates the Hot and Cold sections so even with the compressor on in Defrost mode and the heater on at the same time the two sections do not interact.

With a older system like yours the evaporator housing may have leaves and debris built up inside of there choking off or slowing down the air flow some this could cause the air to get and feel colder than normal.

If you suspect the Air Flow is not as strong as it should be or were just curious you could remove the blower motor and look inside the evaporator housing.

Some Rangers with different engines this task may be harder than it was with my 2002 2.3 DOHC Duratec engine.

I was able to carefully remove about a hand full of leaves and debris from my evaporator housing.

Doing this also showed me that the evaporator core was starting to deteriorate because of this debris keeping the evaporator wet near the bottom all the time.

By removing the blower you can get some of this debris out if there is any but it will not allow you to get all the debris out.

The only way to know if the evaporator core is completely clean is to remove it yet like mentioned earlier by jswifto if it is not broke leave it alone.

If you do remove the blower, find leaves and debris and plan on removing it be careful that you do not bend or puncture the evaporator core with any tools you may be using to get the debris out with.

If the AC is too cold you can do like you have been doing adjust the temperature to your desired comfort level by using the blend door ( heat cold knob )

If your real anal about it and want that warm fuzzy feeling to know all is well you can connect a good A/C manifold Gauge set to the system and post what the low and high side pressures are.

But I also think your system is working as it should.

Normally when a system has problems it will either stop working from a leak or the compressor will start to fail and clog up the orifice tube and or condenser with shrapnel from compressor.

If you have a problem with moisture in the system from a system that had a leak and was just topped off before you purchased it, the system could freeze. ( but a freezing A/C system would stop working then start again once it defrosted).

You would know about this by turning your A/C on MAX air open the hood and watch the large AC line coming out of the evaporator it will slowly turn bright white and then ice will form.

If on MAX A/C and the system does not freeze even when you rev it up a little to about 1500 to 2000 RPM you know the system is moisture and most likely problem free.
