Engine consuming coolant = bad head or gasket! You'll never get your heater to work with a bad head.

Sounds a little similiar to mine, it being around 100 degrees everyday here in AL. Yesterday I turned the cold/warm knob over from cold to hot while the position knob was on outside air/dash vents and while it should start blowing hot as crap air, it did not. It continued to blow cold as ice air out of the vents as though I hadn't even touched the knob. I am currently researching this issue. I will post again if I find a resolution. I actually clicked on this topic because I thought there would be a fix.

JV, start a new thread, tell us about your truck, engine and transmission. Then describe your problem in detail and we'll try to help you out. (check your fluids first!)

I will start a new thread on this, no it wasn't on max. That would be inside air or 'recirc'. Don't worry, I know my Rangers. I have seen this problem on a Super Duty, but not on a Ranger. I have a factory repair manual and the actuator for the blend door isn't too bad to get to. When I get time I am going to get in there and just see if its stuck. Of course, I have to make sure the core is getting hot first. I'm sure it is though since this truck only has 42k miles on it. Everything is still clean and its never ever been off-road. Thanks guys. Look for the new thread.

X2 This is what I was thinking while reading through. You wont get much heat when the knob is on MAX AC.

Thats a headgasket...Losing coolant, overheating, heater not getting hot, and smoke from the exhaust are all tell tail signs of a blown HG.
