Default Check engine light

So I just noticed my truck doesn't have engine light, I mean does never light up. I just bought and didn't worried because wasn't on when I was test driving bit didn't paid attention if was on when turned the key.
Any thoughts?
Also my reverse lights is out. New bulbs checked fuses and nothing. Preview owner said he have done trans job.
Did I buy a bomb?

So when you turn the key, the light doesn't come on? Bulb may be burned out.

If he did transmission work, maybe he forgot to plug in the reverse light wires into the transmission?

I think the engine light wasn't supposed to be a bulb so if it is it may be.
I checked and looks all in place in the trans

Well what are the specs on your truck? Year and engine/trans?

95 to 03 the engine light is a bulb that can either be removed (seller may have done so) or could have burned out. 04+ I believe it was LED.

I know manual transmissions have a plug in for the reverse lights, but I am unfamiliar with autos.
