Default To those of you with 04+ Gauge/Instrument Clusters

This is directed only towards those of you with clusters that use those tiny 2721 bulbs. I had one that was burnt out, so I figured great time to change the lights to LEDs for something brighter.

I got some T5 white LEDs and I hate the way they look. They are maybe half as bright as the factory lights were and they have intense bright spots, which I somewhat expected even though I got 360 degree LEDs. They don't even light the needles on the fuel and temp gauges at night, which is really annoying. The needles on the speedometer are so dim that it takes my eyes a second to adjust from the brightness of the oncoming traffic to focus on the dim gauge to see my speed. I hate it.

My question is, if you have LEDs and are happy with them, are they brighter than the rest of the interior lights such as the radio? What brand did you use if they are brighter than the originals? If not, is there an upgrade from stock such as maybe a larger 74 series standard bulb? I want as bright as I can get because my eyes do not like these blackfaced gauges. Information on all of this seems kinda unreliable and scarce on Google. Thanks!

My 03 was the same way. Problem with leds is it's hard to get even pattern with just standard wedge based bulbs. Most end up running some sort of strip lighting. It's really difficult to get even light any other way. I ended up doing that method behind my heater controls.

I just can't get over how dim they are. My hvac and radio lights are about twice as bright now.

If your biggest problem is with the needles, I have seen a few members that have made rings of 3 or 4 SMD LEDs that they put right behind the needle where it is attached.

The entire thing is bad. You can barely even read the numbers. Could just be the LEDs themselves. That's why I figured I'd see if it's just me or if other's LEDs are brighter in their trucks with the T5 bulbs

In that case I think you just need brighter LEDs

What color leds do you have? They work differently then halogen you want to match them to the color of your housing so if your gauges are green go with green. I know that sounds weird. But color shades cut light so green light going through a green shade more light will reach your eye because it's blocking everything but the green. I had the green wedge bases in my cluster. They are a good bit brighter than standard white but you will still get hotspots. No way around it without going to the SMD strips.

I got pure white. Wouldn't the green cut the red of the needles?

It could but not necessarily you could do red behind the needles and green for the rest. I didn't notice too much but if your concerned I would do red for needles green for the rest of the backlighting

Does yours use the 194s? Because I know they're way brighter than the T5s. That could be where the difference comes in
