Default Dash lights short

Let's see what the great minds here think about this. I have duratec ranger 04 5spd and the dash light fuse blows constantly like I put one in turn on my dash lights boom blown instantly.... I have seen them on once since I have owned the truck and that was when I let a ******* use my truck and he ended up putting a fuse way to big in the dash light fuse spot(didn't tell me>.<)causing my tag light fuse to blow and when I replaced that fuse and went to go see if my tag lights worked(they did) I looked up and went aye!!! I got dash lights I looked over and my radio was billowing smoke yay!!! -_- Turned off the truck ripped the radio out, checked the fuses, and found the culprit-.- does anyone have any idea where this short or faulty ground could be? Cause now I have no radio or dash lights(I.e sucks the bootyhole)... I figured I would fix this while doing my motor swap

----------

I do have an aftermarket radio(installed by professional) and two woofers with two tweeters(not much room I a single can for speaker choices) in the back(blown from terrible feedback) the previous owner had the speakers back there but had taken out the hu and I replaced the hu previous owner said had no problem with feedback while using his hu

That's almost impossible to answer from a description unfortunately. The dash harness is really complex to be honest and smoke indicates melted insulation somewhere causing your short. Best bet would be to start with looking for obvious burn marks. If not then start peeling back the loom. At that point though it may be less of a headache to get a good used dash harness and swap it out. Especially if your doing an engine swap. What motor are you going to?

Someone put an oversize fuse in a circuit that was larger than the circuit was designed for. Furthermore, they did this when there could have been a direct short (the stereo swap from who knows when). Therefore, it's unremarkable that damage was done. You ask, "does anyone have any idea where this short or faulty ground could be? Well, every single inch of wiring and every connector in that circuit is now suspect for fried insulation and a short, there is no "look here, this is where they always short location" type of answer. To resolve the problems, you will have to use good ol' fashioned diagnostic techniques, and if you get real lucky you won't have to drop a dash and R&R the main hardess, which is where MUCH of the suspect wiring is. At this point, your "friend" should dig in his wallet and pay a shop to find and fix the problem he created for you. If he's not willing to pay for the damage he caused then you are correct, he really is, as you say and I'll use cut/paste for this, an "*******".

It melted the insulation off of half the radio wires partly an two of them back to where I couldn't see them. I'm swapping in another duratec the old one had a bad wrist pin and while saving up to fix it I found a truck(no tranny, bad body) with 60000 less miles than mine for a very good price so I might just say screw it and swap the dash harness. Also the short was there before the radio burnt out I know that there would be bigger issues caused by that so I took out the fuse to the radio hoping it didn't burn other wires inside that would cause extra shorts. The question was about the previous short not the current issue sorry for the confusion and thank you guys for your replies.
I was calling that friend a dumb***.

Yeah you have a major short somewhere. If the donor truck has all the same features id say swap the whole harness and be done with it. There is a fuse box in the side of dash which you probably are already aware of. Then there should be a main bulkhead connector on the firewall near the drivers side. Everything else will spider through the dash. If you burned that many wires and never knew the original cause I think you'd be chasing your tail checking the harness. If the donor is good I would just use it.

That item (more specifically, it's known as the CJB) does not exist on an 04+ model. Nor does the relay box under the dash or does the GEM. All of these components are integrated into the SJB, a major part of the new wiring setup for 04+ models. Hope his SJB didn't get damaged during the short/overload event as replacement will add to the cost of repairs.

So the wiring harness out of a 2001 wouldn't work :/

Not on an 04, if that's what you're asking.

Ok thank you for the information a bit of a bummer but it saved me a lot of work I guess I will chase the rabbit tail to try and figure out the issue while I'm doing the motor swap
