Default need to replace passenger seat with one that has a child seat tether

2007 Ranger Sport

The seat does not have any tethering point, which is mandatory for all forward facing child seats in Canada. The Ford dealership said that they never made anything to accommodate tethering and that they can't legally help me.

I cut open the back of the seat and there's definitely nothing strong enough in there for tethering a child seat. Does anyone know if it is possible to just replace the passenger seat entirely with one that has a top tether anchor point?

Our daughter barely fits inside our rear-facing child seat with her winter gear on. Within a couple of months at most she will be too large for the seat. We desperately need a fix for this that doesn't involve getting a new vehicle as that is impossible at this time.

I've never heard of something like that - and even if it existed, I doubt it would be "legit" as it wasn't original factory equipment (and therefore not a tested combination etc.)

Personally, I wouldn't trust a "modified" setup like that in any vehicle, much less in a Ranger configuration.

I'm with him.
If there was a universal, legal product, the dealership would likely know about it.
As for getting a new vehicle, where there's a will there's a way. That's your best bet.

OP, look in your owners manual for the properly designed, approved and proven solution for safely restraining seated children as nothing else will make that grade. If you don't have a copy of the owners manual, you can DL it for free on fleet ford.

I think the problem is the laws/requirements changing in the 10 years since it was written (or the truck being built), not sure when the Canadian law he is referring to came around. It is a good start, though.

Page 114 of the 2007 Ranger owners manual shows where the top tether points are on your Ranger. It's a little metal loop at the center-rear of the base part of the seat.

http://www.fordservicecontent.com/Fo...2e.pdf#page114

I just went put to check my 2011 and found it there. I think this has been mandated on all cars/passenger-trucks since 2000.

The child seat tether strap would go over the top of the seat (under the headrest if possible, down the back of the seat, the clip into that little metal loop at the base of the seat.

----------

There are no lower tether points, you'd have to use the seat belt method (seat belt goes through thr child seat)

Holy Moses, THAT'S the top tether restraint? That's batshit. Besides not reaching, having no headrest means that I don't think that would even be safe to use.

I think it's ok to run the strap up over the headrest and down to the tether point. Once you cinch it up, it'll keep the childseat secure from moving forward. There won't be much play from the top of the headrest to the child-seat tether strap (typically at the top of the seat)...

You also have to consider the passenger airbag - not sure about 2007, is it a sensor/automatic or a key-switch disable?

Curious: Where's your wife going to sit? Jump seats?
