Question customizing headliner

before i start my headliner i want to know some stuff

should i leave the old fabric on put the new material right over it or tear it off then apply the new fabric?

is the 3m 74 or 76 a good quality for headliners?

id only tear off the old fabric if its all ripped and torn and fucked up. otherwise just leave it.

and as to the 3m spray, i think lowes carries some 90 strength or something. i used some upholstery adhesive when i did mine, that isnt even legal in my state (shhh)

i would at bear minimum pull the cloth off. but, depending on the age of the headliner, the foam may need to come off too. if your old headliner is sagging in the middle, more than likely the foam will need to come off. if it's not sagging, or the front/rear edges are starting to peal back, then you may be okay.

as far as glue goes, i only recommend weldwood contact cement. but it has to be sprayed through an old paint gun. it's made to glue vinyl tops to cars, so it can stand up to the heat/weight of the material.

i thought about taking my headliner out. I'm having a guy who does airbrush to paint it black and put a silver browning emblem or a ford emblem on it. Any suggestions on how to do it right or what to put?

I wonder how duplicolor vinyl paint would work on a ranger headliner
?

usually, vinyl dye will make most cloth crusty and hard.

could always do 3d graphics.

I'm talking about the paint spray that people use on seats, and carpets ect...

I bet it will work well considering the headliner rarely gets touched.

dye. some people claim to get good results, but what can be so great about painting some cloth? it'll rub off, make the cloth hard, take a ton of cans cause the cloth will just soak it up.

sorry, i'm not coming off on you, but it just pisses me off when people think dye or krylon fusion or whatever you want to use is the answer for all problems. i feel do it right the first time and you won't pay more the second. a headliner can be redone for $50. that's really pretty cheap.

I'm talking about paint that is specifically for carpets, not fusion.

how long have you been in the business? if you think you know more, please, tell me your secrets and i'll share mine with you. i know my stuff. after 10 years, i think i know what i'm doing. you may not think that, but guess what. we don't use dye, or paint. we do things the right way the first time, using new material. go spend your money on some spray paint and let me know how it turns out. when it's hard and crusty, or has tiger stripes, compare that to a professional job. three or four cans of black "paint" will not get you the same result as a couple yards of black headliner.

The headliner in my 03 is in rough shape (bought it used)

I would love to "rubberize" it with a vinyl paint or similar material. I've used duplicolor vinyl and fabric paint before on flexible areas that get abused with good results.
