I used the vinyl dye on my center console arm rest and the leathery part on the door above the door handle...On the leathery part IT LOOKS AWESOME LIKE IT WAS ALWAYS THAT WAY...on the center console armrest..it kinda sucks, animal hair gets stuck on it its scratchy and its faded over time. IMO re upholster the headliner

Definitely tear it off and put the other stuff over it... I am doing the same thing, and I discovered that you can just simply take the backing to the headliner out and put whatever material you so desire over the top of it. ( Black leather here ) GOOD LUCK!

can it be done? sure. but after time, it's going to rub off and you are going to have tan/black seats. i have recovered many sets of seats where the people tried to be cheap and they had to pay to have them fixed. so why pay for it twice?

I have put in headliners since the 50s, last one was leather headliner in a 30 year old Ferrari.

Modern systems generally use a plastic liner for shape, a 1/4" foam cloth glued to it for a comfortable feel, and any kind of headliner material glued to the foam. If the foam material is presently in good shape you may be tempted to gently pull back the headliner and reuse the foam, BUT a day will come when the foam starts to disintegrate and the headliner starts to droop down. This is in fact the most common reason for replacing the headliner.

So, ALWAYS REPLACE THE FOAM. It's cheap and available at any auto upholsterer. Use 3M rattle can adhesives design especially for this application, carefully reading the label for times etc. And -IMPORTANT- don't use too much of the spray-on-glue as it can 'melt' the foam and the headliner surface won't be perfectly smooth.
