Default No Tach

I have a 2000 ranger 5 speed with no tach. Doesn't look like any of the manual's came with a tach. I thought I might change out my instrument cluster with the one with the tach, but all of them on ebay have the gear indicator for an automatic.

Will the tach instrument cluster work Ok, is it just plug and play or are there difficulties changing them out.

Thanks

The tach cluster will work. You will need to swap your odometer over if you want to keep your mileage correct.
And some manuals come with tachs and some don't. Same with autos.

The wiring is there if you want a tach, other than the odometer being different, it is plug and play

As for the gear indicator, it slides right out and manuals have a black block that goes in the hole.

If you are getting a tach, I suggest getting a white or silver cluster to put in... I've had both and hate the black ones. Also, Ebay prices are usually a bit high... I wouldn't pay over $10 for a black cluster, $70 for a white, or $150 for a silver. Everyone's max price is different tho (and I have a silver to sell )

There was a point that I would have (I looked for a year or so) and when I found 2 I snatched them up... I have seen people pay that much before, now I just wanna sell it! (not too interested in top dollar anymore haha)

I want to go beyond the original question.

I, too, have a 5-speed with no tach; a '97 with the 2.3L dual-ignition engine. However, I don't want to go to the extent of swapping out the instrument cluster just to get the tach if I could possibly get one of those plug-in, dash-mounted trip computers that include a tach display. My reasoning is that this truck has a verifiable very low odometer reading of less than 24k miles and swapping out the cluster would invalidate the odometer. The trip computer should be able to give me the data I need, including fuel usage and possible mpg numbers without destroying the truck's value as a survivor.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I just replaced the cluster in my '96 with manual transmission. It did not have a tach. I found a '95 manual transmission ranger at the pull a part with a tach. Parts truck was the 4 cyl, mine is 6. Tach reads way off, otherwise everything works. Do the clusters have different mapping for different engines? If I were to find an automatic with a v6, would that work? From the pull a part information any '95 to '97 cluster from ranger, explorer, and mountaineer should fit. I do have 2 of the automatic selector blanks so that is not an issue.

Thanks in advance.

A 4 cyl will fire 2X for every engine revolution; a 6 cyl fires 3X for every rev. This is why the tach you installed reads way off, most likely reading high.

Don't they have a switch in the back to change it to 4 to 6 cly. Or maybe iam thinking of aftermarket one. I do remember reading it somewhere.

The tach does run high. Going back to the pull a part to find a 6 cyl cluster.

Check the back of the tach to see if it has that switch. Then you can use the one you got.

There was no switch on the back of the 1995 unit with the tach. I have read that 1995-1997 clusters work, and some later. Anyone know the actual year range that will fit into a 1996 Ranger?
