Odd AC issue
I have an 03 ranger FX4 with 4.0 and 5 sped. For most of the time owning it the blend doors haven't been switching, replaced switch still not working stuck on mostly defrost but has been blowing ice cold AC. This last week I've had an issue where the AC will work after its sat in shade like my garage for a while. But will quit working after a few minutes driving when it is hot out. Still works fine when somewhat cooler. But driving and hot or sitting outside and hot it won't kick on the compressor. Sitting in my garage right now its been running for probably a half hour at idle, with garage door open and hot outside with hood open. About to take it for a quick drive and see what happens since its now overcast but still hot.
----------
Ok, closed closed hood, backed out of garage and went to pull out of driveway and the AC shut off right away. After idling and working for probably a half hour or so.
Checked both pressure switched with my powered test light. All wires showed ground.

Re: Odd AC issue
Ok did more testing in the last few days. My finance's uncle hooked up a manifold gage to it to check charge. Pressure looked good. But clutch wasnt engaging to spin compressor. When it had worked the whole way over there. Couldn't really test any further at that point. He said it looks like my charge and pressure were good.
I got home from work this morning and decided to check for power to clutch. It worked part of the way home but wasnt when I pulled in the garage. I pulled off the connector and had both power and ground at the connector checking both with powered test light and multimeter set to DC volts.
Plugged it back in and let it sit more. Started it back up and the compressor was going. So I checked for power at the same wire with the test light. Yup I had power. So I think I've figured out that the compressor clutch is getting worn and kicking off when hotter.
Anyone know how to replace the clutch?

YouTube is amazing! Hahah It's usually just a remove and replace thing, not sure how much a clutch kit costs, I know the compressors ain't cheap!

Re: Odd AC issue
It could be a bad clutch, or if its like my problem, theres to much of a gap and it'll need to be re shimmed to make it work again. Did that with mine

Re: Odd AC issue
Thanks for the video. Was hoping to do this with the compressor still in the truck. Realizing now that may not workout too well. I guess I will have to see how much a reclaim, flush, and fill of my system will cost. Ugh this may just have to wait.

most places will reclaim for free and a vacuum and refill usually is around 60 bucks.

Re: Odd AC issue
Yeah in checking around local. Gonna check that clearance first and see if it might be too much clearance and just need shimmed. Well I can hope its that easy anyways.

Re: Odd AC issue
I never would of guessed it needed to be shimmed until the place I brought it to pointed it out. I laughed pretty hard honestly.
