Default Gauge Cluster

Yesterday I was going down the freeway about 80 mph, and my odometer and trip just stopped working (85xxx) and two of my Buggman led dash lights started flickering. This morning all is well. Odometer and trip work, no flickering lights. Loose connection?

My speedometer needle was acting up on me ever since my first cluster swap, and I finally found the problem to be the wire was loose behind my fuse box, so I pushed it (them) back in and it worked for the first time in months... If it is a problem that is only happening sometimes, check the wiring.

Otherwise, the problems could also be explained by 1. Bad LEDs and 2. Worn out odometer gears (I did check your gears tho, they looked fine and worked properly, sadly I deleted the pictures)

When the lights flicker, is that the same time the odometer stops working? And when it stops working does your spedometer stop/stick? The odometer is driven primarily by the same motor as the speedometer.

are you sure you weren't doing 88mph? that might explain the issues.

(the young kids won't get that reference ha!)

And here I thought only DeLoreans could do 88.

WE GOTTA GO BACK. Honestly your lights are great- I'm starting to think I just need to check the connections

The speedometer never stuck or sagged- it held the speed my ultra gauge said I was going. And the lights flicker intermittently, no pattern and there is no change when I hit bumps, so I don't believe it's a loose connection.

Can't stop thinking about this... The LEDs (coming from a good seller) should not flicker, meaning electrical connection.

I MESSED UP EARLIER: There are 2 motors that separately drive the speedo needle and odo. They do get their power from the same place, which is why if one messes up, they both should unless it is a gearing issue.

The odo/trip cutting out with the needle reading fine means
-worn out gears
-broken motor
-motor coming unplugged
I am positive the gears are fine and I plugged in the motor (shouldn't come unplugged easily - like fall off a cliff and stay plugged in strong)
So maybe the motor is bad? Or bad soldering connections?

You can see the 4 posts that the speedo and odometer share. Speedo is the big motor, odometer is the smaller one:

Odometer gears and plug:

This is one of my spare clusters, but you can see how the gears look, worst case if you take it apart and notice something looks way worse than this, I can send you any parts you need.

Well, the odometer has not given me any more issues, nor the trip. Let's hope it stays that way. However, the lights continue to flicker. One (behind the 60 on the speedo) flickers for the first fifteen minutes of driving, then quits. After about 25, the lights behind the temperature and gas gauge begin to flicker, no matter if I'm stopped or going any speed. Could this be a case of loose connections that are caused by the warming of the cluster?

----------

Update- I've driven for thirty minutes and I was sitting in my truck while it was idling, and the flickering stopped. More and more this is pointing to loose connections between the bulbs and the cluster, meaning I need to get in there and clean up the sockets and get them back into perfect conduct.

I'm getting more and more frustrated. Took the cluster apart, cleaned off the terminals, made sure there's good contact between the bulbs and the sockets and the sockets and the gauges. The same bulbs still flicker after its nice and hot, about 20 minutes in. I'm going to put incandescents in the same sockets and try again. If that doesn't work, I'll put incandescents in the other sockets I have and see if they work

Final update (I'm doing this so I have this thread as a reference) I replaced all the LEDs with incandescents, and there's no more flickering. I tossed the LEDs into my old cluster and they still flickered. So bad LEDS. The odometer and trip are still intermittent, however I've found they only stop when the lights are on for an extended amount of time. I'll just use my ultragauge for those, and since the vehicle is over nine years old, I don't need a odometer reading to sell it.
