Need help with a silver hvac
I picked up one at the pick and pull and tonight tried to swap it over only to find issues and I think its cause mine is vacuum controlled and the silver hvac is electric? Cant mix the 2 I gather.
What year explores does one look for to get the vacuum controlled one?

Re: Need help with a silver hvac
Fret not. My father had installed one of these in his '03, had the exact same problem. You'll want a hacksaw, some wire, and a pair of matching plugs or other detachable connector.
You'll need to remove a couple plastic tabs for the center control, which ones I don't recall but they'll be blatantly obvious once you start in. The small two-pin connector which is for the backlighting will need to be relocated, thus the plug and wires for said reloaction. As far as I know, there wasn't a model with the mechanical blend door switch. It is possible, as they're exactly the same in every other respect.

I have both in my hand, and I have no idea how either fit together

Re: Need help with a silver hvac
On the back of the silver HVAC, the cold/hot rotating switch (official name?) Is set up differently, which is evident since it doesn't fit right with your switches.
If you remove some plastic (I say some because I honestly don't remember), which gets in the way of the switch. It should be obvious which plastic pieces need to be taken off and filed/sanded smooth simply by attempting to install your center switch.
You'll also need to relocate the connection for the backlighting, as this is in the way too. Simply buzz off the plastic sitting around those two pins, bend them over, and solder a pair of wires to them, along with a plug or connectors of some kind to connect it to the vehicle.
If I had photos I'd post them, but alas I don't. It's not hard to do and it took all of 30 to 45 minutes.

Let's see if I understand...
take apart the silver one.
Replace the middle component with the old unit thing to make it vac instead of elec.
Because you have a new switch there it is different. So you need to make a new hole for that
The new hole interferes with the one for lighting, so make a new one for lights
Make it look pretty
Put it in and call it done.
Is that right?

I don't understand why you don't just get the correct hvac module or whatever it is called, install it, be happy. Am I missing something ? Would be a whole lot easier !

The hole itself is fine, it's just the electric switch is designed differently. We're moving components around or removing them entirely for the new switch to mount. BUt yeah, that's pretty much the jist of it.

Re: Need help with a silver hvac
From some reading it sounds like their is no Vac. silver hvac only electric. Heard some having success removing the face cover and transplanting it over to your existing one but guess its not easy to do and has a high failure

Re: Need help with a silver hvac
You could consider swapping from a vac operated system to electric. No idea what's involved in that but, hey. Could be cool.
