Heat gun. Its not threaded, rather pressed onto the splined shaft. Heat that sucker up and pull hard...

i used a cut off tool and cut a relief into it. I then chissled the rest off. They are a pin in the ass. O and i unbolted the shifter from the trans and held it in the vise

When I did mine it was really hard. I did everything I physically could to pull it off... then I grabed a monkey wrench and that did the trick after awhile.

When I did mine it was sort of cold out so like the others have said, heat it up if you can. It will help melt the glue.

I removed my shift knob (88 ranger, splined shaft no threads) using a "Pickle Fork" that you use to remove tie rod ends. Put it between the knob and the collar on the shaft, and tap with a hammer. Three or Four hits and it came right off, but that might have just been luck. I didn't apply any heat to the knob, didn't damage the knob, and didn't bugger up the shaft. In my opinion, it worked out great.
~Jeff

P.S. -if your shifter doesn't have that collar under the knob, this won't work. I Don't know if the newer ones have them or not.

2n options:

1. The simple one, get a replacement knob that incorporates a set screw and will fit over the splined shaft. The set screw against the splines should work to hold it without modification but if that is not satisfactory then take the set screw out and put a mark through the hole where the set screw contacts the shift lever. Then drill a hole in the shaft there and screw your set screw in a little further so it passes through the shift lever and secures it well.

2. The shift lever is normally hollow. Get some all thread in the size and thread pattern that your shift knob uses, cut a piece of the all thread to fit down inside the hollow shift lever and use JB Weld to secure it inside the lever. Let the JB Weld set overnight before you attempt to put the knob on and drive it. Screw on the replacement knob and you're good to go.
