I cut all the plastic and rubber off with a dremel then beat the X shaped knob off with a hammer (in a vise). I used one from this site http://www.uprproducts.com/ford-ranger-interior.html the only drawback is it gets HOT in the summer and very COLD in the winter.

Mind your head!
A friend of mine forced so much that when it came finally off, he hitted his head and stoped at the rear sit!

It is possible, but you'll have to turn/grind the shaft down to a threadable size. I touched mine up on a belt grinder to get it down to a workable size for a 1/2 thread, and then threaded it by hand. If you want to use a 3/8" thread (Common size for shift knobs) it will be a more serious undertaking then mine was.

I'm wondering if it would be possible to rig up some kind of adapter, bigger hole on the bottom that goes over the shaft then a threaded piece on top so that way i dont have to do any grinding and i will always have a threaded shaft in a sense.

Have no idea if this even plausible any ideas or input?

SO your shaft ended up being threaded?
