Just a reminder to everyone out there if your truck has been recalled, get it fixed. This poor guy probably would've survived if it wasn't for the shrapnel.

An interesting tidbit from that link:
The government has concentrated on areas of high absolute humidity based on the theory moisture is making the explosive airbag chemical unstable over time. The chemical, ammonium nitrate, is believed to be the cause of why the metal airbag inflators explode during airbag deployments, even in slow-speed accidents.

Latest article I read on Car and Driver said that Takata is now working with a rival company to produce the new deflators since they can't handle the amount of replacements that need to be produced.

Default disable takata airbags on 2006 ranger

I just found out I have Takata airbags, and there is a recall on my truck. But replacement will take a long time. I don't want to drive the truck and get hurt by a small fender bender. I want to know how to disable the driver airbag. I am considering unhooking the sensors behind the bumper. I am hoping somebody has already done it and can give me advice. will doing that cause a blinking light in the dash or annoying beeping error? Or should I simply remove the airbag from the steering wheel?

Normally I would be against this, but I am with you as that bag will kill you if it is a bad one...

I say take out the bag and disconnect it from the wheel... There is no way to keep the pasanger bag on while the drivers is off.

The reason you should disconnect the drivers one is because that wire is least likely to be damaged while it is unplugged.

Keep in mind your seat belt will give you a lot of slack when you crash, so think twice about driving it. Ever go to a jy and see a steering wheel litterally bent back? Yeah, avoid high speeds.

Drive safe! And to get Ford to fix it as soon as they can, come back every day to the same dealer and bitch to them.

My truck is also among the recalled trucks but the recall states specifically that it's just the passenger side airbag, could one not just turn it off with the key and be okay till repaired? Or is it still blowing when turned off?

Well don't expect to get your drivers airbag replaced ford will only replace the passenger side bag on this recall. They will issue a separate recall for the drivers side.I just had mine replaced this week after I contacted ford customer service. My honda bags were replaced back in October, ford recalls suck. 2006 fx4 built in the twin city's mn

My understanding talking with ford is that they can replace the passenger airbag now, but the driver side recall just came out a week ago and will take time. My truck has a switch where I can turn off the passenger side. But the driver side is the one that worries me. It feels like a loaded gun waiting to go off. Ford dealership won't disable it, and wont tell me how to do it myself.

Angry Airbag recall sort of

After waiting since July to receive a letter from Ford telling me the parts were available. I called Ford customer service and was told to call the local dealer and have him order the parts. Got a call and took it in expecting to have both air bags replaced . I was told that the recall only covers the passenger side air bag. The drivers side will be recalled on another recall later according to the service manager. The Honda air bags were replaced last October. Wish I had a key switch for the drivers air bag.

I merged a few recent threads together into this one - since it seems we are having another run on airbag threads & all the info should be in one overall recall thread.

I also made this a "sticky" - hopefully it's easier for people to find this way.

Until you can get it fixed, don't worry about unplugging anything on the airbag itself, the module, crash sensors, inertia switch, etc....just pull the damn fuse. Safest thing to do.

I most certainly wouldn't unhook the airbag by taking it off the steering wheel, that's just dumb. Especially this time of year. Little bit of static electricity build up, aaaah great, just blew the bag up in your face.
