Default 2003 Edge Fuel Guage Has Stopped Working

We have a 2003 Ranger Edge, 4WD. 125k miles. The 3.0 6 cyl.

To fill it, it has historically taken around 13+ gallons. In the last couple of time the gas pumps are reading 14.5 gallons. I always made sure to crank the gas cap down to where you hear the clacking sound 2-3 times. Last week the gauge didn't work for a few minutes. Now it doesn't work at all and the empty symbol is lit after we filled it up.

Any ideas as to what this could be?

Thanks,

First off, it should be a 17.5 gallon tank. And 2 options: bad cluster or bad sensor in the tank.

Even if 17 gallon tank. My gas gauge, when I hit E I still have 3 gallons left in the tank.

Yeah Casey I used to have a 96, it has a hell of a reserve lol. Mines a 5th gen, I believe it's 4 gallons per each quarter tank and then a gallon reserve. Ive run out of gas several times, it's a really small reserve on the new Rangers.

When I replaced mine it was the sending unit that was bad. Sounds like it's a rather common thing that goes out. Seen a lot of threads about gas gauges

Yeah I've noticed several recently. I'd hate to be one of the guys having to drop their tanks and fix the damn thing.
