If it's a weak splice, then it could. You're also risking exposing the copper to the elements, which could lead to the wire itself corroding out. Just make sure it's a solid splice and the result is very well sealed.
Edit: Duh, interior. In that case, corrosion is pretty much no concern at all. It's still a good idea to seal it up though. You never know.
