Default 93 Ford Ranger OBD Code 998 and 222 Does not like to start

I love my Ranger, but lately it has been driving me mad. I am almost wishing this issue was mechanical lol

The story so far:

One fine day my ranger would turn over but did not want to start. After about 3 -5 attempts it will start up and runs without any noticeable issue so a figured it might be the battery. I took it to Auto Zone and sure enough the batter tested bad and $100 later I had a new one. Same problem on start up but then I noticed the Check Engine light. I did the old paper clip trick to get the light to flash me a code and got back:

998 and 222

After digging around this forum I came across a few helpful threads and started with the ICM (Ignition Control Module) and replaced that bad boy. As fun as that was to put the 3rd rear screw back in, it still did not fix the problem. I went on to change spark plugs, test coils, and wires as well as moving relays around to see if any of that might give me a starting point. No luck. The truck runs fine once it is stared, but does not like to start. Some times it fires right up when I turn the key, others it can take up to 6 attempts. If anyone has any advice on this I would be very grateful! I can't seem to track this sucker down!

Might post this in one of the engine forums. This is the interior forum.

If I remember right, code 998 means the computer is running in Failure Mode. Something is so far out of range that the computer does not understand it. So it substitutes a fixed value so that the truck can still run.

Code 998 is always accompanied by another code, in your case Code 222. Code 222 has to do with the DIS. Either the left or right side ignition system, I'll look it up in a minute.

If the ignition system is the problem it would explain the hard start.
