"End piece"?

You need to be more descriptive. Pics would help.

Does the key still rotate the cylinder?

The correct way to remove the lock cylinder is to remove the steering column covers, use the key to rotate the lock to the run position (IIRC), insert a thin punch into a small hole on the cylinder housing to release the cylinder and pull it out.

As posted just two days ago from a similar thread:

Ok stay calm. It looks like you still have some of your ignition key cylinder in the housing, but it looks like most of the "locking" part is gone.

If you have the new cylinder you can see the tip that is left in. SO how do you turn it to get it out?

Remove your kick panel (2 7mm bolts hold on hood release, another 2 on the bottom edge) then remove the metal plate behind it (like 5 8 mm bolts).

Your gonna see a white box on the bottom of your column. This is your ignition switch. Unbolt it by removing the 2 torx screws (like T25 or T30 i think).

When you pull the box down (BTW you can keep the harness attached), you should see a rod that slides into the box from the column. When you turn the key this rod is moved and is what actuates your ignition switch. So you should be able to jimmy the rod forward or reverse (I forget) and it should turn the ignition cylinder tip to the point where it can be pulled straight out. May need a magnetic pickup tool to get it out.
