Lost keys
Hi All,
New here and really just have one question. My son lost his keys to his 99 Ranger, a computer chip key. The local dealership is saying they no longer have codes for more than 10 years old and since he doesn't have any keys it will take a complete ignition change to program new new keys...like $300-400?
Anyone familiar with this and or aware of any other options?
Thanks

Re: Lost keys
wow, really. well if they cant do it youre better off to buy the ignition yourself and do it, dealerships are pricey

A locksmith or an independent shop would probably be cheaper. Seems hard to believe the story from the dealer. 10 year old vehicles are pretty common now a days.

Re: Lost keys
Worse case scenario. Go to the auto recyclers, and get a new (to you) ignition. Most of them probably have a key in them to begin with.
I would ask a different dealer, or call Ford USA directly.

Re: Lost keys
try a different dealership, sounds like a load of BS to me... rangers have used the same style ignition chip key for YEARS!
also check into local hardware stores... my local true value can cut & program computer chip keys for a lot less than the dealership will.

Re: Lost keys
The original dealer from when the truck was sent from the factory should be able to get you the code for the key chip. A lock smith can figure out your code for about 150 in my area.

Re: Lost keys
Thanks guys, appreciate the help. I'm out in the sticks here so other options are slim without going 100 miles.
Do locksmiths / hardware stores have access to codes if you don't have any keys? The dealership claims the issue is that he doesn't have any key of the keys, if he had at least one they could scan it.

Re: Lost keys
oh yea if you have no keys the dealer is your only choice then...they have to use a computer to access the PATS module to wipe it and re code it to the new keys

Re: Lost keys
That's basically what they are telling me. Surprised that it involves a complete ignition core and door lock swap out though because they don't have access to codes more than 10 years old. You would think they would retain those as there are a ton of vehicles out there in that age bracket yet.

AutoZone sells the ignition cylinder for about $65+ you gotta have it programmed, and you'll need new door lock cylinders as well, it'll be a lot less than $400 but you'll have two set of keys. Or like someone posted you could go to a junkyard and pull the door locks and ignition cylinder with keys and get it programmed at a mechanic, and you'll only need 1 key. Good luck.
