It's for the explorer eatc. A sensor would go behind it for a thermostat for the auto ac feature on the electronic hvac. Explorers and rangers have the same dash. But rangers never got the eatc like the explorer.

in the newer fords (F150) it's a microphone. but here i have no idea

Spot for temp sensor for EATC system for explorer.

If you have a radio that has Bluetooth and a mic it would be a good spot for it. Out of the way hidden.

How we'll would the mic work behind there because that vent faces the passenger side.
