Default Nothing but heat

I drove my daughter's 98 today, and realized that there is no temperature control. That's why I have to drive it every once in a while- she doesn't pay attention to these things.
I can control the flow, but I can't control the temperature. It is hot all the time, with no change when I adjust the knob. I haven't pulled the center cover off yet, but I wanted to pick your brains and see if there was insight before I go digging. Is the temperature blending done by cable, vacuum, or electric?

Electric control, and it's probably the actuator or the gawd forbidden blend door that broke. If it's the latter it's usually a drop the dash event or if you're lucky there is a vid showing a fix on an Explorer that might get you out of that.

Thanks. I've been googling it, and have come to that conclusion.

I'm searching for links to repair the blend door, but can't find any that work. The blenddoorfix link won't come up. Any other suggestions?
It's raining like crazy out now, and I don't have a garage. As soon as I can, I will go pull the glove box and see if the actuator is working or not.

The no drop the dash fix I *may* have seen on a interwebz site called serious explorations (bing it); on youtube there is at least one vid showing how to R&R the actuator. Three screws on that, it's the back one that a PITA to R&R.

I've ran into this on my 1996 Ranger and found the top of the blend door where the motor unit (which is electric) inserts into was broken. I purchased a unit that is completely metal not plastic and cut the bottom out of the plenum with a dremel and replaced the blend door without taking out the dash. It's not a hard job just pricey. The plastic door at Advance Auto is around $13.00 and the steel replacement about $100.00 but it will never break again and you would not have to remove the dash.

----------

Ford explorer/ranger heater treater is the name of the company that sells the blend door and has a video online showing how to perform the repair

----------

It cost me $129.99 back in March of this year

Thanks for all of your input! I did find Serious Explorations, and some other articles on the repair. This is our 5th Ranger, and the only one that has suffered from a broken blend door. Oh well- soon, I'll have the experience under my belt.
