Pulled the interior out of the 2001 because it needed to be cleaned, badly. In the process I discovered that BOTH of the driver seatback springs had snapped. I had an extra seatback (also broken) lying around from my brother's old truck and decided to do some inventing. It appears that these things like to snap right at the lowest bend in the spring, which limits your fixing options.
I wen't to bLowe's to see what they had that I could use. Grabbed some cable and hardware. It was supposed to all be 3/16", but I think the wire was on the wrong spool, for all the sizes. I made it work though.
So I cut the spring out with a Dremel, leaving as much of the welds as possible. I did that to help keep the cables in place. Then I wrapped the cable around and attached all the hardware. I pulled it as tight as possible and had my dad crimp the other end, then tightend them the rest of the way.
It worked out pretty well. I ended up putting this seat back on the passenger seat, just in case it didn't work out. I'm not sure if I'm going to fix the one I pulled out of the truck or not. I may use it to try and make a low back full bench seat. I think it would look cool, especially in a regular cab.
