2002 XLT Gauge Cluster Question
I did some searching but wasn't able to find an answer. I noticed that http://www.car-part.com says that the 4x2 XLT and 4x4 clusters are different. Is that true? I want to replace my 4x2 cluster with the white neetles with a white face with red neetles. It looks like the 2003 clusters will work..
Thanks! Sorry if this is answered somewhere.

Re: 2002 XLT Gauge Cluster Question
Um...the 4x4 clusters have the lights for the 4x4 hi and 4x4 low, I think thats the only diff.
Like...that does not really matter though, they just wont ever light up.
*i could be wrong about that

'01-03 Edges AND XL's ALL have black face w/ white needle clusters.
'03 XLT models got silver face w/ orange needles.
'01-03 Explorer Sport and Explorer Sport Trac are white face w/ orange needles.(NOT regular Explorer, just Sport and Sport Trac)
01-03(?) B-series got black face w/ orange needles
All clusters listed above will work on all 98-03 trucks.
'04+ Edge and Sports got white face clusters, but those are NOT interchangeable into an '03 and older truck.
The white face clusters and silver face clusters for your truck OP, I'd stick to whatever your truck is. 2wd or 4wd. The reason is because on the dash, you can see the 'idiot lights' when they're not lit. See pic below of the white face and silver face cluster. The 2wd silver or white clusters just don't have the 4x4 idiot lights. The black clusters.....ARE 4wd clusters. If you look closely, you'll see "4x4 hi" and "4x4 lo". You can barely see 'em, but they're there. If it don't bug you, then don't worry. You can run a 4x4 cluster in your truck just fine.
Check the how-to section of the site for the write up I did on odometer swaps for cluster swaps.

EDIT:
01-02 XLT, 01-03 Edge & XL got black face/white needles.
03 XLT got silver face/orange needles.
All previous years were black face/white needles.
Just to clear it up a little bit more. LOL.

i swapped out my tachless cluster for a 4x4 cluster with a tach and painted the needles red. though i would advise using a sharpie marker or really transparent paint. but other than the light not being to visible in the needles im really pleased with the looks.

Re: 2002 XLT Gauge Cluster Question
Cool! Thanks guys! I thought the 2003 XLT cluster was white. I think I might go with the 2003 XLT silver, I think that will work fine. There is also a cluster that is similar miles to what I have. They look pretty easy to swap, is it a big deal to swap it out? I have the PRNDL1, are those a big deal to take on and off?
Do they all glow the same way?

The white and silver do come in 2WD and 4WD versions because the cutouts for the two 4x4 indicator lights are very visible on these light colored clusters. No doubt, the factory didn't want 2WD owners making warranty inquiries about the lights. If you don't mind the extra cutouts, a 4x4 cluster will work fine in your 2WD Ranger.
Compatible silver clusters were supplied in the 2003 XLT. Light color clusters also came in the 2001~2003 Ranger Tremor, Explorer Sport and Sport Trac.
Black clusters are all the same, 4x4 and 4x2. The extra cutouts are nearly invisible in these.
