Re: Electric 1997 Factory Ranger
I turned down a really great job opportunity at Ford quite some time ago, and the reason for turning it down had nothing at all to do with the job either. Worth saying that ones initial thoughts about the area will be reinforced when the company you are interviewing with hires a third party company to (unexpectedly) come in and pitch how great and wonderful the location of the prospective employer is, not to mention downplay and brush aside questions about little things like, oh,.....crime.
*I've never in my life been in a community with so much bullet proof glass between cashiers and the public, nor have I ever been in a town with so many secure main doors acting as a first layer of defense to condos/apartments. Scary place.

Overall, the lead in the bodies found on/near campus in the mornings scared me more than the lead in the water. However I did survive off of bottled water and my roommates drank sink water.

Re: Electric 1997 Factory Ranger
I was actually working in Downtown Detroit this past summer. I had a good experience. It's a lot better than what it used to be. I had no problems commuting from midtown. But I wouldn't want to live there per say, just because I'm a northern, truck drivin', country music listenin', 4 stop lights in the entire county kind of guy.

Reason #2 why I left. Love my little 2 light town.

LOL, lead poisoning is always an occupational hazard of criminals and their associates. Last I saw a listing of most crime riddled towns in the US, Flint and Detroit were in a close competition with one another. Something else I didn't know at the time of that interview.....city of Dearborn has the highest percentage of arabs in the country, and a large percentage of them (and others) that don't speak English. Could make for some challenges, starting with what would have been a mandatory daily commute from Ann Arbor, sharing the road with a lot of other commuters.

Ah yes, the Peoples Republic of Ann Arbor. Or A2, as the cool people call it. I'm not cool, it's a shithole.
And let us not forget Yipsilanti, pronounced, ip, si, lanti, the celebrated city with, literally, a phalus shaped water tower. Now what the hell is that telling you?

Re: Electric 1997 Factory Ranger
I'm originally from Highland which is west of Pontiac. In the past 25 years I've lived all the way as south as Royal Oak and as far north as Pellston. Last time we actually lived in city limits was back in 67 during the riots I was like 6 years old. Went to first thru 3rd grade in Detroit schools.
Seen plenty of bands at the Joe, silverdome (is it still there?) and the palace of all but deserted Auburn Hills.

Reaffirmation of my decision to pass on the job, thanks to it being at ground zero in the rust belt and the remaining vibrancy of the community (real estate values?) was in decline and as it played out, it's been proven to be true.

Trust me, it's values in general. The ghettos in Duhtroit have been abandoned, and moved west, well, at least expanded. They leaped over a couple communities somewhat, but Duhtroit county isn't making any meaningful improvements. Oh well, it won't be long before Saginaw down to Toledo are nothing more than Toledo north. Michigan is the next thing to a third world country, no matter what color picture out wonderful governor paints. What truly amazes me though, is who Michigan carried for prez. After Ricky Snyder, you'd think my state would have learned a lesson, but nope. I'm gonna stop before I'm banned, I'm starting to wax political, and no doubt my views aren't shared by the majority of "mericans".

I bought the Ranger I have new back on the east coast and drove ~3,500 miles home via I80, then the blended I80/I90 through Toledo, Gary (<<< scary place), and God forbid, Chicago, Illnoise (must be the road toll both capital of America), I saw a thing or two and the sights are forever etched into memory.

I used to be in Gary a few times a month, yepper, it can be scary. Always, always, use the bypasses around Chicago, unless it's between 0230 and 0430. And that isn't always a sure thing.
