How to: Replace gas tank filler neck ( tank leaking gas )
A week after buying my 97 Ranger, I filled it up and noticed gas dripping on the ground afterwards. After a quick internet search, I found that this is a common problem on Rangers. The rubber hose on the filler neck gets brittle and cracks on older trucks.
You'll need,
Ratchet with a T55 torx bit, 7mm and 8mm sockets,
New filler hose ($36 on ebay)
A buddy to help lift the bed,
Common sense; You'll be working around gas fumes, take precautions accordingly.
Replacing it was pretty easy, only took an hour once I had everything. To remove the bed take out the 6 large bolts in the bed, and the 3 small screws behind the gas cap. If you disconnect the tail lights the bed can be lifted completely off, but I just put some wood blocks underneath and slid it back a foot to get access. Undo the hose clamp on the filler neck and install the new one.
The truck bed on blocks,
and the culprit (cracked hose)

Re: How to: Replace gas tank filler neck ( tank leaking gas )
thanks for this awesome write up bachelor house! i got home today to find my parked truck leaking fuel, once i siphoned out a couple gallons it stopped so i'm assuming this is the problem.
i think this is the filler hose that i need but it would be great if you or someone else could confirm it for me: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1993-1997-FO...8108db&vxp=mtr
i have a 94 2wd xlt SC. thanks!
also, it sounds like i don't need to mess with the lights if i only slide the bed back, correct? i'll be doing this solo so i won't be able to remove the bed.

Can't answer the first part, but I would suggest disconnecting the tail-lights. Just one connection. I did mine myself, just wrestled the bed back enough to get it done. Start to finish was about an hour.

Re: How to: Replace gas tank filler neck ( tank leaking gas )
Yes, it looks like that part will work.
I got mine cheaper, maybe from amazon..
http://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Filler-90-97-Ranger-Pickup/dp/B007HRGTJA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1376713958&sr=8-2&keywords=ranger+tank+neck
The lights disconnect easily, but you don't need to if you are not removing the bed. The bed could probably be moved by one person, but it's way easier with two..
EDIT,
nope, I got it from ebay..
http://www.ebay.com/itm/370732801298
And I recently bought something for my Civic from Am-auto.. good business..

Or just unplug the harness under the tailgate.

Re: How to: Replace gas tank filler neck ( tank leaking gas )
I need one for mine too, the neck is good but the flapper at the top where the gas nozzle goes when filling up is barely hanging on, however mine is an '03 with an extended bed, I have 118" wheelbase. All the offerings at Rockauto, same parts as at Amazon are listed for 112" wheelbase. Besides worrying about the flapper falling off into the tank, we live in a county that has vehicle inspections for emissions - I know they check the cap to make sure it'll hold a seal but not sure if they look at the flapper.

Re: How to: Replace gas tank filler neck ( tank leaking gas )
i forgot to chime in with an update but i got it changed with no problems. my neighbor helped me lift the bed off the truck, i have no idea how you did that by yourself. i can see doing it without a rear bumper, but not with.
i got my part of amazon for $39: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DZAO7PQ/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
i see now that part is up to $50 but it worked and it came in two days (prime shipping!) so now no leaking fuel!
thanks again!

Pretty sure you don't have to remove bed. Saw a video of aa1auto guy doing it on YouTube
