2005 Ford Ranger 2.3L

Problem: 10-15 minutes to fill up the gas tank. Gas pump constantly shuts off like its full.

I've read page after page about 'pump slower' 'filler neck is kinked' 'this or that is clogged' so we just decided to tear it all apart because it wasn't working anyway.

Precautions: Neither myself of the Ford Ranger Forum are responsible for any damages related to attempting this procedure.

The only tools needed is a flat screwdriver and a sealant of your choice.

I have no idea how emissions will be effected but in our case the canister was completely clogged so it wasn't serving a purpose anyway.

I won't bore you with the canister removal because its pretty straight forward.

Once you get the canister removed you'll have to get the end cap off. We used a flat screwdriver.

Once off, you'll find this.

Remove the clip and take off the interior cap and you'll find all of the charcoal.

Dump the contents into a container.

There was one large clump of molded charcoal but my brother crumbled it before I could get a picture. Here's an example of what we found.

We had enough usable charcoal so we just picked out the bad and re-used it.
Next take an air hose and clean your filters.

When you put the filters back in, be sure to place the foam so that it touches the charcoal.

Pour your charcoal back in, replace your inner cap, then put the clip back on.

Clean and re-seal the outer cap using your choice of sealer then re-install the canister.

After our canister and lines were back in place, we had a successful fill up at the gas station in record time!

Thanks! It's actually surprisingly simple. We tried everything else so tearing into the canister was all that was left.

I did this mod and it worked like a charm....I might add, the charcoal was fairly
clean...the old crusty filters were the problem....I scraped the filters off and reassembled the can...worked perfect.

Default How To: Clean Clogged Charcoal Canister - Fix fuel filling issue

I know this is an older thread but filling up my tank has been a real pain in the kiester for a long time now. Backpressure. My tank has been off several times. Checked all lines and hoses. Replaced the fuel pump unit. That only solved a starting issue (had to cycle key on key off a couple of times).
Came across this thread and gave it a shot. What I found was that the charcoal in the smaller section was a solid, moldy chunk. Dumped out the loose charcoal and had to chip out the moldy stuff. Dumped back in the good charcoal. Seemed to be enough clean charcoal left. I can now fill up the tank with no problems.

I don't own a Ranger but wanted to share that this also works for the Focus. Same year and engine as the OP. Saved scads of cash thanks to you. My ST has 2 vapor canisters in series but the bigger one matches up for the fix.

Could you technically dump the charcoal out and not put any back in?

Mine is located between the bed and spare.

I just used what wasn't moldy. Tossed about 1-1/2 cups or so. Haven't had a problem since.

Don't know if anyone sees this thread anymore but I just replaced the fuel pump assembly and after the replacement I had a problem filling up as in it would click off when I know there was only a couple gallons in the tank. I couldn't get it to stop so I left the station not knowing what went wrong. I filled up again the next day, this time slower ( just held the pump halfway instead of letting it run) and it was able to fill up all the way.
Could I have pinched this vent hose or obstructed it when putting the bed back on? I have never had this problem before doing the fuel pump replacement.

Is there a walk-through like this that still has the pictures attached? Also, I'm having trouble getting the canister off my '04. I'm afraid to muscle it and break a connection, or something...

You might have a bad vent valve or purge valve in the evap system.
Or you possibly reversed 2 lines on the tank.

See if you can stick some plastic tubing down the filler neck. Sometimes those can have a coil spring as an anti siphon device.

I realize this is a very old post, but hoping someone can help me out. My dad has a 2004 Ranger XLT with the 4.0L. The truck has been in storage for just over 2 years and when I went to fill up the gas tank I couldn't get more than 1-2 seconds and the handle would shut off - took me 15-20 minutes to pump less than 1/2 tank. I was going to disconnect the evap canister and see if it is plugged, but I cannot figure out how to get the hose to release from the canister. I will try post a picture of the fitting. I tried using a Ford fuel disconnect tool my dad has, but either it isn't deep enough to depress the retainer or it is the wrong tool. Any advice on getting the hose off without cutting it
