Default Re: Headlight Mod for 2001-2010

Bringing this thread back from the dead, I just tried to do the headlight mod on some brand new ebay headlights last night. Got the oven up to 230, and the glue would still not release, yet the plastic was starting to deform. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I was doing wrong or what I need to do differently so that the silicone releases before the plastic starts to get too soft from the heat?

I don't know how many people are still on this forum but I will try to help you the best I remember. I've never done it myself, but I think maybe you should try a lower temperature for a longer amount of time. I think I remember people saying it took forever, but you do not want to set it high enough the plastic deforms

Back in the day, I did mine @ 190~200F and it took a lot more time and more prying than I expected. Successful eventually and no deformation at that temperature. Also modded the 06+ corner markers to match. My guess is that most people now use the imported headlights that are pre-modded.

Sounds good, thank you both. I was thinking the same thing, lower heat but for a longer amount of time. I’ll try that tonight and we’ll see what happens

Yep lower temp, longer time.

15min per light at 200 ish has always worked for me. Some sealants are different though.
