If anyone is interested, I just replaced the cam synchronizer in my '01 Mazda 3.0 4x4, and took apart the old one to show the shaft where the upper bushing failure seems to have appeared. I posted pictures in the Ranger Picture Albums under the title: 3.0 Cam Synchronizer Dismantled In my case, the oil hole in the housing appears to have been blocked by sludge, but the deficit in the design is that there is no lube to the upper bushing. I wonder if the press in cap shown in my picture could be the site of a small hole drilled into the bushing, and then a tube inserted to allow lubrication - much the same as older benchtop grinders used to have a flip top oil cap for the bushing that the shaft rode in. Any thoughts?

Good write up. Would this be basically the same for the 4.0 also?

I think so...but I cant confirm it....I think the parts may have different part numbers.....
But yes I know the 4.0 does have a cam sync and sensor....but for some reason its only in the 3.0s that they have problems with...I know member redneckstone did a replacement in his 4.0 a while back..

I am not the only member to replace one. They go bad just not as often. 4.0l ohv has one numbers are different. Same install except you need to remove the upper intake to even get close to it.

so just wondering, every once in a blue moon when its real cold, my engine will just make one single chirp at start up. is this a symptom of this? or does my 4.0L SOHC even have one?

You can cheaply and instantly tell if its your camshaft synchro if you take a mechanics stethoscope to the top of the sync sensor

I recommend changing both... the sync and sensor...might as well kill two birds with one stone....

I recently did this and used your write up. Thanks! I have a question though. I put it in as perfect as I could. A code has never been thrown for it and aside from late shifts once in a while (may not be from the cam shaft synchro being slightly off) I haven't noticed any problems. Would I have known by now if I replaced it in the wrong position?
Thanks

I dont think the cam sync being off would affect the shift points....
And I think if it was in the wrong position it would be misfiring and throwing a CEL.

Just keep an eye on it and the oil pressure..
