Working on an f150 8.8 swap and built custom Brackets to mount my cobra brakes off my current axle. It all lined up and worked out very nice just need to weld on my tabs for my parking brake cables next.

If you guys have any questions that are still in answers ask away. My old swap has worked great for a long time!

This thread is pretty self explanatory if one takes the time to read it through. I've got a great handle on what to do, it is just the mounting brackets that will take some time to locate as I simply will not hurry this process through and spend the big bucks for new ones on the internet.

Patience is a virtue. I have gone 12 years now without rear disc brakes on my 05 FX/4, I can go a few months longer. If they are out there, which they are, I will find them in due course. I do, however, plan on purchasing new rotors, calipers and pads. Not messing around with used consumables. Too old for that.

Thanx for following up and posting. One question though for Mikerider. Do you agree with my assessment of this thread that Rangers after 2001 with the computer braking system will have less issues relating to the so called spongy brake pedal feel? I surmised from my reading that most issues in this regard came from those that have or had earlier model trucks. It seemed those that have later model Rangers saw better results with a more solid feel petal and stronger braking power.

In my experience it depends on the truck. Some report no issues with the residual pressure valve some have to swap some don't. Personally I have stainless brake lines and ranger MC and it works ok, softer pedal then I would like but it works and they don't freeze up like the drums. Tried the 250 mc with no real improvement. Going to try an expo master when I swap in the new axle

Mike,

Thanx for the reply.

I'm giving some thought to making my own bracket to mount the cobra rear brakes. When you fabricated the bracket on that F150 axle what thickness of steel plate did you use? I'm thinking 3/8".

Not trying to over simplify, but I be thinking that as long as I get steel strong enough, thick enough and have the holes in the right places, I would be good to go.

Went 1/4" and reinforced across the bolt holes and across the 2 mains. Most aftermarket brackets I have seen are 1/4" so figured I would give it a shot.

Another theory. Could it be that the Cobra calipers are a little more demanding on the braking system then the V6/GT calipers?

I plan on using the V6/GT calipers as I feel this setup is more then adequate for my means so we shall see.

They are the same calipers, just different brackets, mounting and rotor size.

Has anyone found a link to most of these parts. Rotors and calipers are the easy part. The anti moan bracket I've found as well. The rest are eluding me!

There is currently a set of Cobra brackets on sale on eBay right now for $214. Brand new. Too rich for my blood. I will not pay more then 50-75 or I will make my own. Easy to do, just time consuming and ties up my truck while I make the templates, cut and drill the steel plates, yada yada. Google search for the dust shields. They are out there. As for the brake lines remove the stock ones on your Ranger from the block on top of the diff and go to Autozone and pick up new hard lines from a same year Explorer and Explorer hoses. That will have all the right connections to make this work. Just have a couple of crimped brake lines with the right connectors ready to screw into the block to stop the brake fluid from leaking while you do this mod. Last thing you want is to drain the system and cause air bubbles in the ABS module. You will not be able to get that air out without a ABS scan tool and someone who is versed in the procedure. My research has led me to believe that this most likely is the cause of some here that complain about spongy brakes. Generally spongy brakes equals air or bad rubber lines.

The problem I am having with the bracket is I can find lots of SN95 Stangs, it is just the yards do not want me cannibalizing the parts I need rendering the rest of the diff useless as far as they are concerned. As soon as I level with them what I want to do, there is a long pause on the phone. LOL.

I have not done this mod yet as I am still looking for parts but I have read this thread top to bottom, some of it twice and just about anything you want to know about this mod is in here between the OP and this post.

If anyone sees this and having bleeding problems or the back brakes not working right, try bleeding them with the truck at idle. I found that for some reason I wasn't getting enough flow with the truck off while bleeding resulting in poor brakes. At idle I had lots of fluid coming out which meant my back brakes were working great.

So if yours aren't working, bleed them again with the truck at idle
