I believe, that within the first 5 pages of this thread, the OP used the Currie kit, and said what fittings were needed.

If using gt or v6 parts u can use 15s but the cobra calipers and rotors are larger and require a min of 17s.

Simply not true.

Here's 15"x10 steel rims and COBRA rear 12" conversion. It's my wheels and the how-to author's truck. Goofy, but proving a point....

LOTS of clearance. Also, my brother, this thread's author, runs 15x7 chrome steelies out back with winter tires during the winter months.

Alloy wheels tend to be thicker and hug the rotor a little more than steel wheels. But judging by the clearance when we test fit my rims, there's LOTS of room. Saying 15's won't work is like saying NO '03+ 4x4 can have 15" wheels.......front rotors are 12" and the calipers are considerably larger than the COBRA units.

I'm planing in getting cragars 15x8 with a 4in backs pacing and a -13mm offset. Will it work just to be sure don't want to buy rims and then the rotor and caliper doesn't fit.

This is awesome. I just got my Ranger a few weeks ago. I have everything needed to do this from previous Mustangs. Might shoot for a Thanksgiving weekend swap.

the explorer backing plates will mount to a stock ranger axle. going disc expo brakes is even easier.

Hey everyone,
I have done this swap on my 2002 ranger but I’m running into soft pedal issue. When the truck is off the pedal is rock hard, when I turn the truck on it goes to the floor!?!? If I pump the pedal once or twice it starts to feel much stiffer but then goes back to the floor. I have 4 wheel ABS. I have had the ABS unit bleed and also replaced my master cylinder. I’ve checked the vacuum line/check valve on the booster they are fine. I also have pressure bleed the system at least 10 times. Is there something I’m missing? Any help or advice would be great Thanks everyone

Not true. The flange the drum backing plates and Explorer disc backing plates bolt to have a completely different pattern. This is due to 28spline housing versus 31spline housing. To reference the OP:

  • 2008~2009 FX4 Off Road (only when equipped with the "XR8" option - Torsen diff/31-spline/4.10 ratio).

If you've got a 31spline axle. That's the only advantage to an Explorer disc swap other than junkyard availability for backing plates.

Going mustang is a TON easier to work on/maintain. The parking brake uses existing Ranger cables and the caliper instead of a small drum and jerry rigged Explorer cables. Explorer is complicated and very difficult in the parking brake area. Ends up costing more in parts too.

If I didn't have a 2005 Fx4LII axle and wasn't broke at the time of the swap, I would have COBRAS instead of Explorers on it for the pure simplicity of the Mustangs.

How much harder do the cobra brakes brake the rear of the truck? Do they brake so hard that the rear will lock up in the rain if I really get on the brakes?
